How both sides of the redistricting referendum are working to mobilize younger voters

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - With only a few weeks of early voting remaining in Virginia’s redistricting referendum, both sides of the issue are ramping up efforts to mobilize people to the polls.

That includes young Virginians - a group that poses both a challenge and an opportunity for those rallying for or against the constitutional amendment. Statistics show that voter turnout among young voters is the lowest out of all age groups, and, Republican State Senator Bryce Reeves says, once you factor in a mid-April referendum, things get even tougher.

“I think a lot of young people right now, they’re focused on the national issues,” Reeves said. “I think it’s going to be difficult to get young people out to vote for this election.”

That doesn’t mean both sides aren’t trying. On Friday, April 3, University Democrats at the University of Virginia held a press conference with state lawmakers to try and persuade peers to vote yes and hit the polls.
