would have never thought the reason their gas and energy prices are increasing because of the actions of a single elected official they never voted for and never thought would affect them so directly who is thousands of miles away.

Ya, Netanyahu is an accomplice, but Trump is the boss.

(3,139 posts)I'm 73 years old and retired, with my 71-Year-old Filipina wife. We live on a sprawling 25-acre family farm in the Central Philippines (Iloilo Province).
Since Trump's war started, fuel has increased 250%. We need it, not only for our vehicles, but for our farm equipment. We are highly dependent on fertilizer and, although we won't need it for two months (the next planting season for rice), we are quite frightened of the increased cost and availability.
I made flight reservations 4 months ago to return for 2 weeks back in Boston this month (April). I am quite worried about the jet fuel shortage and the possibility of flight cancelations.
Trump certainly has affected my life for the worse. I guess there's no where you can go to get away from him.

(33 posts)I felt very strongly I needed to respond to this post.
I've been warning my family and friends about Trump since 2016. He was likely mentally ill even then, and definitely erratic, egocentric, crude, greedy and undisciplined. I felt he was a real threat to not just US citizens, but also to Global stability, Environmental health and Equal Opportunity between all citizens of the World. He promoted Greed, Bigotry, Division and was a real threat to World Commerce, Trade freedoms, Democracy, Global health, neighbourly harmony, Individual wellbeing and freedoms.
I believe many people around the world could see that Trump was a Conman, out for his own interests. Perhaps because of good education, media freedom and personal struggles, many could see his intentions behind his lies and actions. I mean who but US citizens can view themselves as living in the most powerful Country in the world. That responsibility must be heavy for any reasonably aware citizen. I wonder if it could add to both a sense of invulnerability/ entitlement or to a sense of vulnerability/despair.
Don't get me wrong, I love the United States. I spent a year there, alone, driving about 50-60k in an old Datsun in 1989. West, East, North South. It was a very unique experience. I travelled to just under 35 countries and a majority of US States, doing it rough sleeping in trains, hostels and my car. I felt that my time in the States was one of the best and scariest times in my life, but the beauty of North America is almost unparallel. I was constantly in awe. Natural scenery was what my focus was on in my travels. I had a Readers Digest guide to the Natural Wonders of the World that I was using to get to as much natural wonder as I could. I did the whole two and half year trip for around $1000pm (which includes all airfares and transport). I included a circular trip around Australia in that time frame when I returned.
So, I am very invested in what happens in your Country, in Democracy and in the Global future. My family and friends often got mad at me for constantly trying for forewarn them about what might be happening with Trump as a President, about what could be around the corner. My daughter would say, don't want to know and what can we do anyway? I would respond, be aware and care. Vote carefully. I also said that I had joined this social group to try to put in my perspective about life in Australia and what comparisons and contrasts could be used in any protest/media/signage slogan to get the risk message out to other U S citizens during pre-election periods. I advised online to bring in topics of personal freedoms, next generations, use comparisons between States and Countries that managed its citizens better, to use mythical pathway imagery showing the likely outlook between a Trump win and a Trump loss.
My parents migrated here from the UK back in the 60s and my dad immediately started his own business, then he turned to lone-man prospecting for nickel and made lots of money which helped all his 6 kids. I detailed how my life in suburban (western) Australia was safer as I lived around less guns. That I didn't fear going out anywhere. How I had a reasonable State School education. Enjoyed Public Health. That I managed to do half my University education for free. That I was well supported by my Government during divorce, single parenthood (2 children), disability and retirement. That my children were doing well. My daughter and her husband has a flourishing business with more than a dozen staff, my son has a great nearby job in Electronics and is trying to build a personal business on his computer in his own time. That I now own my own home and have a good relationship with my ex as we both help our daughter and son, where ever and whenever we can. My Government is a Labor Government, a party that is Citizen/Small business/Worker focused. Yes we have housing issues and have had corruption in our own Conservative Political Party, the Liberal Party. They are on the out and are now being overtaken by a third party, called One Nation, which resembles your Maga Party. My State party is also Labor and I live in a State well supported by mineral excavation, but the Labor Party is also committed to Environmental protections and reduction of damaging, toxic airborne gases. We are one of a few States in Australia that have now decided to stop old growth tree logging (better to be late that too late). They support Unions, public schools. We have laws to protect consumers, workers, people's rights and freedoms (including refuges).
Unfortunately, what your President advocates, what your President does, tends to not stop at your borders. He condemns gender differences, decries multiculturalism, insults women, prefer anti-woke (anti-aware) ideology, targets his pro-democracy 'enemies', treats his international long standing allies very badly and tries to pull apart well intentioned Global treaties and unions. That can only affect every person on this planet. He's promoting pollution, corporation monopolies, revenge, crass language, religious bigotry, elite controls, police thuggery, mob rule and majority citizen ignorance. He has probable ties to some of the worse elements in our world (eg Epstein circle, unleashed Tech ambitions, increased use of Oil and Gas over Green energies, etc. All that affects my Government, my Country, my family and my world. One good result from Trump&Co's overt incompetence, ignorance, illegality, destructive behaviour is that some countries have turned away from Right Wing ideology, away from Conservative extreme religious Political parties that ferment disunity in their policy.
I believe your President is mentally ill. I can't believe that around 20-30% people in your country still support this guy. Thank goodness for Democratic underground.
Anyway, I told my family that although we live so far away from your Country, we can still spread the word about the risk of Conservative Governments that are not working to maintain our middle socio-economic classes, not working for the labour force, not working for small business, or our environment, or our right to democracy, or to maintain social harmony or respect from our real allies. We can join quality social media to discuss options in far away countries from an outside perspective with respect, in relation to their Elections & Governance, especially when outside suggestions might help and when the matter is vitally important to everyone, including our children and grandchildren. I don't want to see my family in army greens! That talking politics isn't an impolite discussion. If the populace can't talk about the people who govern their environment, what the hell should they talk about. The weather! Shoes! Food! Neighbours! Holidays away! Well that is our environment and that can be changed for the worse by our lawmakers.
It's been hard being labelled a Trump obsessed person for years, but all that I warned about is now affecting them and is what I foretold could happen. I tried to protect my family by advising them to be aware, vote in their best interests, transmit pro-democracy ideas to others and do what they can to prepare and inform about the risk of Trump&Co.
I say Trump&Co now to bring in my next concern. Trump is canny as a conman, but not as a democratic leader. He doesn't read. He is impatient and uncaring of others. He is likely unwell mentally. So he relies heavily on others and is easily used by other people, organisations, collectives and less than ideal countries. He advances the threat by manipulating fed up voters and ignorant bigots. He feeds into the wealthy classes wants and desires. He has suggested shooting protestors (not achieved), hanging his enemies, nuclear bombing cyclones, injecting bleach to stop a virus, etc. He has less guardrails in this 2nd Presidency. He has surrounded himself with people in governing portfolios that hate their portfolio. Anti public Education leaders in Education, Anti clean environment in Environment, Idiots in Health, Worse in Justice and Policing etc. Pro Monopoly Business in Business. Pro rampant AI in Tech. Pro 1%ers thread throughout all of this. Even the most innocuous ambitious politian have suggested that workers should just get an allowance when they are replaced by AI. So lets ingrain mass 'cogs' OUT of the wheel, while 1%ers control the ones lucky enough to get a job IN the wheel, so then they can just sit back and pull the strings after the majority have been almost completely removed from any say about how their community should be run. Worse idea ever!
To finish up, I reiterate that I love the United States and defend it constantly. I met some wonderful people in my travels there. I care about the world. I have studied politics, humanities, education, arts and social sciences/services for 5 years. Australia is far from perfect and is certainly not safe as a side-table to larger, more powerful global collective machinations that Australia can only bleat protest from afar.
I can't wait for 2026 US midterm elections. I count the likely changes in House Seats and Senate Seats regularly. I find additional comfort in media mockery of Trump, when they use Trump&Co's words against themselves. I gain relief from watching the protests. I admire all the push back I see and hear.
I reiterate that for the next election, please promote these aspects. Utilise images of risks to the next generation; remind lawmakers about their children and how they would view your vote or current actions and how they will be affected as a result of their action or inaction. Use images of a degraded environments under Trump, images of what corruption, lawlessness can effectuate. Design slogans and images that show where right and left ideology paths could lead communities, images of loss of freedoms and all that implicates, loss of personal rights to free speech or the right to be genetically different, the impact of any loss of small businesses, the loss of middle class, the loss of public supports, the loss of public health and education, the loss of law and order, the loss of quality international allies, the loss of national/international respect (and what can result from that)..... ultimately, essentially, the loss of health, welfare, freedom and democracy. Some of these losses, the choices, the results can be put on a placard, or in a slogan, in a speech or via a simple image.
I haven't posted for a long time. The first time I did post here was only the 3rd time I have ever posted ever. First two times was with only at the ABC News website. I was extremely nervous. Most of my days now are watching news, political you tube discussions, watching a few favourite TV series and reading books. That is when I am not with family or friends. I have bad knees and not keen about any fake knee implant operation, but family pressure and family need is pushing me in that direction. There are big limits to what I can do to help my family, especially in relation to Trump&Co, but when I was young I was involved in protests and sit-ins at Uranium mines and Logging sites etc. I was very much the black sheep of my siblings and, to some extent, even now with my own children. My own dad considered me, the youngest child, to be weakest member (I head him say that). My parents were very old school, having lived through WW2. I have experienced poverty, violence, moving from house to house, job to job, low status, daily budgeting and disability. I have experienced many opposites to those things as well. University, low cost Travel, Starting Social Support groups (eg home educating children networks), briefly multi property ownership (I subdivided my home property to sell a side block, with my children helping so we all would profit). So I have lived a full life, much of it enhanced greatly from my year in North America. I hope readers won't take any insult from what I have written. I only want to reassure that there are many many many people who care about what happens in your Country, who care about your National Parks and Cities, who care about your poor and your politics. This is one persons effort to reach out, to describe my life and of what a mixed public and private left leaning Governance can offer its citizens. I wanted to reiterate my unity to your struggles, to again offer protest ideas at this next Election time, to remind you that free and fair elections are possible (I am thankful that we have small fines if we fail to vote & fail to care) and that voting here is extremely easy. I love diversity and what we can all learn from those that live outside the normal curve of what might be considered a general lifestyle circumstance. Diversity and mixed race is a blessing and inevitable anyway, so why destroy what we have just to keep bland, uninformative, unimaginative uniformity.
So you are not alone. I am with you, half my family is with you and the other half (now affected by your Governing actions) respect my warnings. Your Trump&Co administration/organisational influences have many powers, but also many flaws and aspects that can be easily mocked or pulled apart as being unrealistic, harmful, unlawful, unpractical and ridiculous. Use that against them. Use their own words against them. Compare and Contrast.
When Democrats get in power, their 1st job is fix the 60% vote requirement to pass policy, (maybe make it a more realistic 55%). Fix the Supreme Court imbalance. Get back to expert assignment of judges, sheriffs, etc. Fix the unfairness of elections (manipulated boundaries, unfair donations, attending thuggery and wealthy influence), get back quality free majority public education, move to green power, reclaim free journalist rights, reduce business monopolies, tax the rich, remove more guns, regain free public health supports (including mental health) and support families and children with real support (not just school food). Make sure women are protected and that childcare is run by well educated, checked and tested administrators. Regulations are there for a reason, the reason is us and our wellbeing. Again, Australia is not perfect, but most Australians understand that rules and regulations, that voting and civic interest is vital, that experts and expertise are vital in a democracy.
I hope my expansive 'essay' here is helpful and not insulting. I can only talk from personal experience. I was only in your Country for 11 months, but sleeping in a car for many months, or with people I met who let me stay a night in their homes (rich and poor) as well as hiking every day through country and counties; really opened my eyes significantly to what you must face on a day to day basis. I saw poverty that lived across the freeway from extreme wealth. I saw how mothers lost their children to crime and poorly managed legal/welfare supports. As a lone Australian women, I heard stories, saw things, experienced situations that were almost unimaginable in Australia. I was extremely lucky to survive two and a half years of such low cost travelling risks and likely put my mum through hell the whole time.
So from me in Australia, hang in their. Many are watching and caring and wanting to help however they can. I want you to know that a better political system, a better voting system and better living system is possible. Especially if you have a Government who has a reasonable chance of passing policy with a reasonable opposition who can push back without insults, a Government who cares about the health of you and your environment, and who cares about civics and policy and voting, law and order, democratic international unity, fair trade, equality, the worker, the unions, small business, free discourse, fair and easy elections, practical infrastructure ideas and quality public health and education. A good Government can make so much difference.
The World has come a long way. Progress is a double edged sword so good Governance and civic responsibility is vital. There is a lot to be optimistic about. Keep up the protests. Watch Rachel Maddow, Meidas Touch, Legal AF, Reuters, ABC Australia, Guardian Australia and other quality news outlets that care about truth, law and democracy in your Country, but just as importantly, from outside your Country. You can show your democracy loyalties with how you spend your time and money. Maybe reduce Facebook/Twitter news. Shop with care. Join the protests if you can. Be aware, care and keep safe.
My thoughts are with you 24/7. After all, there are no real boundaries in this big beautiful world.

ps. My poor grammar & spelling is either due to culture, tiredness or ineptitude. I've taken so long to reply that it's likely no one will read this anyway. I rarely post, so please forgive me for how long this is. Apologise if I have hurt anyone's feelings or seemed to be talking in a high mannered way.

(33 posts)Yes I know people have been shot by this Administration. I typed a word wrongly. Maybe more than one. I'm not good at this posting business and was in a hurry to get it out there.
Good Luck.
