Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has asked the highest-ranking US Army officer to resign amid the Iran war.

Hegseth asked General Randy George to step down and take immediate retirement, sources told CBS News.

A Pentagon official said: 'We are grateful for his service, but it was time for a leadership change in the Army.'

George, a Biden appointee, is understood to have clashed with the administration's vision for the Army.

Vice Chief of Staff General Christopher LaNeve, a former aide to Hegseth, is likely to be considered as his replacement.

Hegseth's decision comes as 50,000 US troops are deployed in the Middle East ahead of a possible ground invasion in Iran.

As a four-star General and the 41st Chief of Staff, George is the senior-most uniformed officer in the Army, responsible for the organization, training, and equipping of more than one million soldiers.

George reports to General Dan Caine, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff; Secretary of the Army Dan Driscoll, the civilian head of the branch; and Hegseth.

Why? According to Donald, we’ve already won.

My experience in the Army was that West Point officers had more of a reverence, a historical focus to service. My first Commander was from the Citadel . He wasn’t rah rah but he was a helluva leader. He left right after I got there but my Troop, my platoon specifically, would have followed him anywhere.

Born and raised in Iowa, George enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1982 before attending the United States Military Academy at West Point from 1984, commissioning in 1988 as an Infantry officer. He was deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan multiple times during his career. George served in the 101st Airborne Division during Operation Desert Storm, commanded the 173rd Airborne Brigade during the Iraq War, and commanded the 4th Brigade Combat Team during the war in Afghanistan. He held staff positions on the Army Staff and the Joint Staff before commanding the 4th Infantry Division from 2017 and being deployed to Afghanistan again. George was later the commanding general of I Corps from 2020 to 2021.

The hierarchy is that no one can be smarter than their commander.

Trump as the top of the Peter Principle, on down.

Stevie Miller is not officially in the chain-of-command.

Is that he went to USMAPS (the prep school) before he went to West Point.

I met him a couple of times and he is very measured and thoughtful, almost like a professor.

I always took West Point guys as more measured.

Our Chief Scout told me once that if you think some of those guys aren’t there TO play football you’re crazy. He’d instructed there. He mentioned a prep school so I guess it was that.
