Two interesting stories.
First one is about the increase in South Africans returning home because it turns out they think America is much more of a shit hole country than South Africa. (my words) But the gist is they think its a better for schools, more affordable healthcare and better quality of life than living in America - These are people who have lived here for a long time so it does not seem that these are refugees that that trump and musk courted. But it just shows how much they are liars about whites being persecuted in South Africa.
The second one is about the refugees - turns out they are not enjoying America either.
2 things that stuck out with me about this story -
1. This sounds like another grift - the resettlement companies getting paid to resettle them. Maybe they are indeed legit companies. But what proof do we have that these people are really fleeing persecution?
2. Its OK for these people to get paid hotels, rent and SNAP benefits, etc but brown and black folks are seen as villains? Even when they are not even getting benefits, many are working and paying taxes but we still throw then in jail?

(5,117 posts)Contribute to the taxes (local and sometimes Federal) and receive very little in return. There was a study performed several years ago that showed how much they contributed - it was a surprising amount compared to what they received. MAGA hatred is so crazy.

(8,197 posts)South Africa has struggled for years with low economic growth and high unemployment. The official unemployment rate was 33.5% in April-June of this year.
During that period, the unemployment rate was 37.6% among Black South Africans and 7.9% among white South Africans, according to the statistics agency. It was 23.3% among South Africans of mixed race.
They came here because they had it so bad there? Somehow I don't feel too sorry for them.
