A man was shot in the leg Wednesday night during a federal immigration enforcement operation in north Minneapolis, according to multiple sources with knowledge of the situation.

Witnesses say a series of gunshots followed a car chase and foot chase involving federal agents.

In a post on X from the city of Minneapolis, staff said, “We are aware of reports of a shooting involving federal law enforcement in North Minneapolis. We are working to confirm additional details.”

"While the subject and law enforcement were in a struggle on the ground, two subjects came out of a nearby apartment and also attacked the law enforcement officer with a snow shovel and broom handle," McLaughlin said.

"Fearing for his life and safety as he was being ambushed by three individuals, the officer fired defensive shots to defend his life. The initial subject was hit in the leg," McLaughlin said.

The three people then ran into an apartment and barricaded themselves inside, the agency said.

"The attacked officer and subject are both in the hospital," McLaughlin said. "Both attackers are in custody."
