Notices went out late Tuesday to more than 2,000 programs nationwide that will be affected by budget slashing at the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.
The Trump administration is cutting nearly $2 billion in funding to more than 2,000 programs nationwide that provide addiction prevention, treatment, recovery and mental health services, according to more than a dozen people inside the federal government.
(snip)
The cuts will affect longstanding agency investments like drug courts that offer treatment as an alternative to incarceration, programs for pregnant and postpartum women in recovery, screening and referral services, and overdose prevention education for young people.
(snip)
Fatalities nationwide from overdoses of opioids and stimulants have been dropping since 2023, when they peaked at close to 111,000, according to federal data. Provisional reports estimate that totals for the 12-month period ending in August 2025 will still be about 72,000.
(snip)
At least a dozen chapters of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, an education, support and advocacy organization for patients and families, also had grants terminated. The organizations New Hampshire affiliate, for example, took a $347,000 cut to programs that support families with children who have mental illnesses, as well as initiatives that train law enforcement personnel how to intervene during mental health crises.

But the next time there is a gun massacre, expect them to scratch their heads and say gee, we need to do something to address mental health.
And the next time they commit war crimes, expect them to proclaim they're saving us from imports of lethal drugs. For every boat they bomb, 24,000 lives are saved, and they really care.
And the next time people are assaulted or killed on American streets, expect them to say it's because they are protecting us from "illegals" who bring drugs, crime, diseases, and violence to our great land.
I'm so sick and so furious right now, I don't have the words.

(29,870 posts)1. It shows they aren't really interested in fighting drugs
This is the best way to combat that and mental health treatment also helps with that as many use narcotics to self-medicate.
Fighting international drug wars isn't nearly as effective as dealing with the addiction at home. That is if you take what Trump says at face value which I don't.

Substance abuse, I guess he got over it. By the way, I heard he drove his brother to suicide which I can believe.
