Colorado Gov. Jared Polis recently said hes considering clemency for the 70-year-old Peters who was convicted in a 2020 election-related data breach scheme because she is elderly and got a harsh punishment. While Trumps symbolic federal pardon of Peters last month has no effect on her state charges, Polis recent comments are the strongest indication that he might commute the remainder of her 9-year sentence.
Were looking at this across a number of people people in their 70s and 80s in our system, how much of a threat to society are they? Polis, who is in his final year in office, told CBS Colorado last week. We balance that in a way that makes sure that they can spend their last few years at home.

(23,887 posts)if he lets her out as long as the restrictions are draconian... it would save the state money... jails and prison are way overrated as a means of punishment and cost taxpayers a lot of money

(973 posts)the gov has been releasing prisoners in their 70s and 80s in frail condition or with just a few years left on their sentence.
Otherwise, he would make her into a political prisoner

(20,537 posts)It's not so much because of mercy as it is about medical expenses of the elderly. Prisons have to accommodate everything from medical treatments to special care. Much of that require loading the prisoner up and taking them to a clinic on a regular basis.
I often joke that with my medical issues I would be immune from a lot of crimes. Home detention would be the worst they'd give me, and I do that a lot myself anyway.
