With a 400% surge in ICE spending, a recent murder in Minneapolis, and a shooting in Portland, what exactly is Democratic leadership doing? As this administration ramps up agents and detention centers, the threat of assaults, kidnappings, and extrajudicial killings will only rise.
We are witnessing the rise of an unlawful federal police force that answers to no one. The administration claims "absolute immunity," while federal authorities are actively blocking Minnesota officials from investigating the Minneapolis tragedy. How can we trust the FBI to conduct an honest investigation with Kash Patel and Pam Bondi at the helm? Despite this crisis, Schumer and Jeffries appear unwilling to challenge this obscene budgeteven as the GOP pushes for another 10% increase for ICE. We are effectively funding a paramilitary force to operate on our own streets.

The expansion of ICE detention spending under the second Trump administration represents the largest investment in immigration detention in U.S. history. Detention funding has increased more than 400% from approximately $3 billion in FY2019 to over $14 billion in FY2025

But with a government funding deadline fast approaching on Jan. 30 and lawmakers locked in appropriations negotiations, questions have swirled about whether Democrats would withhold their support for legislation funding the Homeland Security Department and risk a government shutdown to force Republicans to consider reforms.

(23,500 posts)That's why ICE was able to go right on terrorizing our communities during the last government shutdown
and frankly we have no cards to play in a shutdown fight after the handful of Dems in the Senate last year betrayed the caucus and caved to drumpf. There is no way in hell the GOP will offer us so much as a shit sandwich now that they know they can just wait us out.
They should just fund the government for the next year and let a hopefully Dem congress take up the night next Jan.

Yes, I understand its frustrating as they are not in the majority. We cant wait for midterms, the stranglehold is growing,

Blame our fascist friendly media instead of blaming Democrats for not doing things they've been doing.

(1,198 posts)built careers standing for everything & nothing simultaneously. As a purely theoretical exercise, it may have been slightly possible to make I.C.E. elimination part of the last budget agreement. Lots of things could, hypothetically, been attached to get the thing done. Unfortunately several folks decided to give away the farm, and got nothing in return. That's what the pundits call "bipartisanship."
