How many more seats can GOP afford to lose?

The cause of death was not immediately clear.
LaMalfa's death was a shock to friends and colleagues on Capitol Hill.

(11,951 posts)House requires a special election.
Ars Longa
(433 posts)is required by law to hold a special election within an allotted period of time usually 3 to 4 months but in some states, it can be up to 6 months.

It may sound cruel to number count, but republicans have deviated so far off from established norms or acceptable limits of behavior it's rediculous.

(68,975 posts)I agree with your polite condolences to his family and am now pivoting to considering how this could be used to help save our democracy.
Unlike the Republicans - whose goals are only money and power - we actually care about the nation. Our motives are pure.

(2,309 posts)After the NJ special it should be 215 to 217.
Interesting though too that Newsom can pull a Rick Scott and delay the special election until the last possible minute.

(943 posts)Texas speical election is January 31. NJ is April 16. Florida didn't delay their special elctions that long. They held 2 of them on April 1, 2025, less tha 3 months after the seats were vacated. Texas was who delayed their special election a lot longer than it should have been. Sylvester Turner died March 5 2025. The special election to fill his seat was delayed almost a full year (just shy of 11 months).
I mightve been confused with the state

(8,983 posts)rather than just announcing she will not run again. MTG has claimed there will be a bunch more leaving before November. There are 25 Republicans who have already announced they will not run for reelection but have not actually resigned (though some may still leave beforeNovember).
Current open seats are Lamalfa, Greene, Turner & Sherrill. Greene and LaMalfa special elections have not been set yet.

(60,780 posts)The House of Representatives press gallery site shows 220 to 213. https://pressgallery.house.gov/member-data/party-breakdown I think that site has not been updated for either MTG or this death. The Hill article showing 218 Republicans likely reflects both of these.
There are 435 seats in total. From the Hill's article, there are four empty seats, one is definitely ours this month and the NJ one likely ours in April. That will leave these two seats empty - the GA one is very red. I don't know anything about the CA one, but it does mean that if we win the NJ seat in April, it will be 218 vs 215 with 2 vacant. This would means the Speaker loses if we get 2 Republicans to vote with us. He also has to be careful about absent representatives.

Apparently Georgia Governor has only 10 days to call a special election which must then be set for within 30 days. I'll have to look up California's rules for special elections.

President Trump ordered a decisive operation aimed at disrupting a narco-terror regime responsible for years of harm to the United States. Nicolás Maduro is the head of a criminal network that pushes illegal drugs into the United States, harming or taking countless American lives.
Todays surgical strike was an amazing display of American military power and precision. I am grateful no Americans were lost in the operation.
Todays actions send a clear message to the world and those who seek to challenge America, that we arent going to make the mistakes of the past. We are putting the best and most lethal in charge- not those who would call our adversaries to give them a heads up. I look forward to further briefings on the raid and what the Presidents plans are for the next steps for securing the western hemisphere from further crimes against freedom loving people.
