Schumer says Senate will vote on Venezuela authorization 'this week'

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said he expects the Senate to vote on whether to formally authorize the Trump administration’s military actions in Venezuela when members return to Washington this week.

The New York Democrat said he is co-sponsoring a resolution that would block the president from taking further actions in Venezuela following the U.S. strikes there as part of an operation to capture Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, who is being detained in a federal prison in New York. Schumer said the administration, which did not notify Congress ahead of the attack, violated the War Powers Act.

“They did not just do ships off the water. They went inside Venezuela, bombed civilian as well as military places. And it's a violation of the law to do what they did without getting the authorization of Congress,” Schumer said in an interview on ABC’s “This Week” on Sunday.

He has been very critical of the boat bombings.

Fetterman on the other hand probably will. Maybe the senators from Nevada. Not sure who else on the Dem side.

if you were never informed that it was happening?

Trump administration informed Gang of Eight of Venezuela operation after it started

The Trump administration informed the “Gang of Eight,” the top Republican and Democratic leaders of the Senate and House and the chairmen and ranking members of the Senate and House Intelligence Committees, of the operation against Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro only after it started, according to a source familiar with the matter.

The administration didn’t give key leaders on Capitol Hill any advanced notice, seeking to maintain the element of surprise while U.S. aircraft and special operators were en route to Caracas.

You can't just stop all money going to the military. The president is the head of the military. Sure Congress declares war, but we have fought plenty of wars without bothering to declare them because Congress long ago gave up their power in that regard because it was easier. The War Powers Resolution says the president can use the military in combat for up to 90 days without congressional approval. The Obama administration even tried to claim if they didn't use ground troops, we could keep bombing Libya past 90 days.

Oh and change that history while in the minority. That should be a breeze.

The republican congress should be asserting their constitutional duty on these matters but basically checked out decades ago.

And I’m no Schumer fan and believe he needs to step away from his leadership position, but this really isn’t on him.

Speaking with a more distinction on MSNBCNOW? Blathering on endlessly on CNN on the rule of law, eventually capitulating that the action against Maduro was just and the Senate is just being pissy?

At least it's good for everyone's ratings. Rachel's will be through the roof on Monday. She's still on Mondays, right?

Quite some time back I looked for, and failed to find the incident where Schumer made some really strong comment on something (may have been in later 2024), and so many people got upset about what he said!

Now, since I can't remember the subject matter (der) - I can't comment on whether I thought it was good, or not; but the point being he was much stronger than usual, and got (rightly, or wrongly) blasted for it.
