I'm going to lose it!
As stupid as the American people are, please tell me they're not going to fall for this too.

(60,783 posts)and there was a rally around the President response.
There was no similar event with Venezuela. Drugs entering the country are dealt with by intercepting them, not regime change in a country that probably is not even high on a ranked list of the source of drugs.
In 2001, the invasion of Afghanistan was polled as being favored by 90 percent of the country. The invasion later of Iraq was favored by around half of that based on W's lies. So soon after 9/11, the fear generated by claiming Iraq had WMD was high for people who both believed Iraq was a terrorist state and possessed them.
There was no similar fear of Venezuela, which did not retaliate after we blew up boats in their water or international waters.

(60,783 posts)My guess is the more he does there, the more potential of blow back. One of the strongest things he ran on both times was no foreign wars.
Consider how unpopular all the occupations in the middle east were both there and at home. In the middle east, both Afghanistan and Iraq were justified by Bush by citing 9/11. Here, it is MUCH weaker to link it to drug trafficking especially when Trump just pardoned the former president of Honduras, who was convicted for that.
I know that many expats who fled Venezuela left because of Chavez and Maduro and I know many liked Trump even before this. However, long term their opinion will depend on what follows. I doubt many who didn't want Maduro would not be happy with a dictatorship that allows the US oil companies to exploit the country.

(826 posts)I consider it a one issue vote at the moment. It may be enough for some people to change their opinion to positive, but there are also a lot of people who will consider the whole Trump tapestry before changing their opinion one way or another.

Military intervention in the country is even more unpopular than Trumps tariffs and health care cuts

The president quickly ran into a few problems:
3. By a 4:1 ratio, polls show the American people oppose the use of military force for regime change in Venezuela including the strike that led to Maduros capture over the weekend.
Based on the public polling data, its clear that Trumps invasion of, and intent to manage a petro-corporatocracy in, Venezuela is yet another example of him prioritizing the interests of his friends and a narrow coalition of voters over the majority of Americans. Most Americans, by a 25-50 point margin (depending on question wording), oppose war with Venezuela
I. Polls show people dont want military action in Venezuela
In all polls I could find that were (a) about U.S. military intervention in Venezuela and (b) conducted over the last six months, no matter what question was asked, a majority of American adults opposed military action. The size of the gap between Oppose and Support for these questions ranged from 27 to 46 points, depending on question wording.
To put that in context, a -37 net approval for a presidential act would make the invasion even more unpopular than Trumps budget act from last Summer, which was then one of the most unpopular laws ever passed.
