...the Trump regime's potential justifications for this kidnapping of the Venezuelan president will not only contradict what the 'Department of War' president spent the past decade grooming his cult to believe about 'America First,' as a candidate, but their logic will run roughshod over actions already taken in this administration.
Actions like pardoning the president former president of Honduras Juan Orlando Hernandez, who was sentenced for trafficking hundreds of tons of cocaine into the U.S.; or Trump hosting the self-proclaimed dictator of El Salvador in the Oval Office making deals with him to jail people from our country in his death camp prisons; or, essentially, this Trump regime's coddling and open associations with dictators around the globe, often in direct conflict with our previously long-term allies.
Moreover, the question now is what other countries does this autocratically inclined U.S. president intend to destabilize with our military forces to carry out his vaguely expressed justifications laced with hubris; countries like Mexico, for example, who Trump has similarity accused of threatening U.S. national security based on his false claims about drug trafficking; false claims about drugs smuggling also repeatedly leveled by Trump against clear allies like Canada?
The only consistent rationale in any of this is that it's all about serving Trump's will and whim, rather than any coherent or comprehensive military or foreign policy which is supported by Americans; that national will manifested in the people we elected who are tasked by the Constitution with ultimate control over the funds the president uses to further his military actions.
'Operation Just Cause' was a U.S. military invasion of Panama that took place from December 1989 to January 1990. The primary objective was to remove General Manuel Noriega, the de facto ruler of Panama, from power and extradite him to the U.S. to face charges of drug trafficking and money laundering. The operation involved various branches of the U.S. military and was marked by significant ground and air assaults on key installations. *_
The U.S. similarly justified that invasion as necessary for restoring democracy and protecting American citizens. But consider that the democratic Panama which emerged from that U.S. assault on its sovereignty isn't even good enough for Trump, who has repeatedly threatened the democratically elected government there with U.S. military intervention in another apparent aspiration by the autocratic American president to militarily take over an independent nation.
Trump's assault on Venezuela, already killing dozens of people in international waters with unproven claims of threats to the U.S. national security because of accused drug smuggling, and claims of a deliberate 'invasion' into the U.S. by Venezuela of refugees which they say are 'drug gangs' pouring into the country.
No matter to them that his military assault has just caused 100s of thousands of Venezuelans to flee the country, exploding the refugee crisis which Trump is opportunistically arraying his politics, as well as our nation's military forces to resist in a self-serving perpetuation of justification for his anti-democratic actions.
All of this should be considered under the already demonstrated folly of U.S. military actions like 'Just Cause,' which threaten to embolden other nations like China in their own intentions to dominate their neighbors behind false claims about protecting their security, like Taiwan.
All they need to do now is attach a hyphen to proclaim the U.S. foreign and military policy and missions, essentially initiated and directed by the will and whim of this autocratically-inclined president, are 'Operation Just 'Cause,' just because he can.
