That Swiss fire - Looks like bottle sparklers killed all those people

Last edited Thu Jan 1, 2026, 06:40 PM - Edit history (1)

And burned up over a hundred more of those young people this morning

Looks like they are available at party stores or you can make your own

Bottom line - careless fire security in night clubs across this planet.
I won’t even mention the lack of fire escapes.

Ban bottle sparklers immediately.

New York Post says the club advertised the champagne sparklers - effin morons

all manner of hazards.

Yes there are systematic ways of improving safety, of protecting people from themselves. Of course those should be done.

But there is also: STOP AND THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU ARE DOING.

Profit by any means - nothing else matters.
The other thing that disturbs me is so called intelligent people’s willingness to put themselves in danger.
I was invited on a boat ride recently - first thing I asked when I boarded was for a count of life jackets. There were five with eight passengers and three crew. I am a good swimmer but I declined the trip. 😀

But, I spent my times in Zurich, Bern, & Geneva. So, I don’t know the countryside.
When I went to Kilchberg for a tour of the Lindt factory.
I have to say that the facility was extremely clean, but I didn't have time to see if everything was up to safety standards. Wouldn't surprise me if that was ok.
But, work injuries are costly, so even a libertarian cares about that.

Promotional videos showed waitresses weaving through the crowd with flaming champagne bottles held aloft and nearly brushing against the ceiling — a party gimmick witnesses say turned deadly around 1:30 a.m. local time.

The fire triggered a rapid “flashover,” igniting everything combustible in the room at once and sending panicked patrons scrambling toward the bar’s single staircase exit, witnesses said.

“There were waitresses carrying champagne bottles with sparklers on them, and they carried them close to the ceiling, which caused it to catch fire,” one witness said.

One waitress was standing on another waiter’s shoulders, and the bottle and the flames were just a few centimeters away from the ceiling,” the other added.

Bottle sparklers: A Hazardous fire risk for hospitality establishments.

https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/bottle-sparklers-hazardous-fire-risk-hospitality-steven-james-hill

The hospitality sector is an essential part of our society. It provides us with the opportunity to socialise, relax, and enjoy various forms of entertainment. However, these facilities are prone to risks, especially those that serve alcohol. The risk of fire in these establishments is a significant concern that cannot be ignored. Therefore, it is critical that they pay close attention to ensuring their fire protection systems are the best they can be.

The hospitality industry is a high-risk sector due to its unique environment, which involves the use of heating appliances, cooking equipment, electrical appliances, and the serving of alcohol. These factors, when not appropriately managed, can result in fire hazards. Moreover, the high number of people who gather in these establishments increases the risk of fatalities and injuries in the event of a fire.
Alcohol consumption in bars and nightclubs is a particular concern in fire safety because of the impairment it causes. When individuals consume alcohol, their reaction time and judgement are slowed, which can hinder their ability to evacuate safely in case of a fire. As a result, it is critical that establishments that serve alcohol take additional precautions to ensure the safety of their patrons.

Bottle sparklers have become increasingly popular in the hospitality industry as a way to create an exciting and celebratory atmosphere. However, the use of bottle sparklers also poses a fire risk that cannot be ignored.

“I think a large number of the injured, maybe between 80 and 100, are in a life-threatening condition,” Ganzer said on Friday. “When 15% or more of an adult’s body has third-degree burns, there is a risk of death in the days and hours that follow.”

... believe I did the same for my kids. We were so lucky, especially with what lunkheads we were as kids.

Wiki - A 2009 report from the National Council on Fireworks Safety indicated that sparklers are responsible for 16 percent of legal firework-related injuries in the United States.[6] The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's statistics from the Fourth of July festivities in 2003 indicate that sparklers were involved in a majority (57%) of fireworks injuries sustained by children under five years of age.[7]

The devices burn at a high temperature (as hot as 1000°C to 1600°C, or 1800°F to 3000°F), depending on the fuel and oxidizer used, more than sufficient to cause severe skin burns or ignite clothing.[12] Safety experts recommend that adults ensure children who handle sparklers be properly warned, supervised and wearing non-flammable clothing. As with all fireworks, sparklers are also capable of accidentally initiating wildfires. This is especially true in drier areas; in Australia, for instance, sparkler-related bushfire accidents have led to their banning at public outdoor events during summer like Australia Day celebrations.[13]
