Trump tells WSJ he takes a higher daily dose of aspirin than his doctors advise in lengthy interview on his health

President Donald Trump told The Wall Street Journal in an interview published Thursday that he takes a higher dose of aspirin than his doctors have recommended, blaming that for the visible hand bruises that have generated renewed questions about his health.

“They say aspirin is good for thinning out the blood, and I don’t want thick blood pouring through my heart,” Trump, 79, said of why he takes a larger dose. “I want nice, thin blood pouring through my heart. Does that make sense?”

“They’d rather have me take the smaller one,” Trump added. “I take the larger one, but I’ve done it for years, and what it does do is it causes bruising.”

The interview appeared to be one of the most extensive conservations Trump has had with journalists on his health, as scrutiny has intensified this year over his age, fitness for office and whether he’s being sufficiently transparent with his medical information. Trump has long had bruising on his right hand, which CNN has reported predated his return to the White House. But it drew more attention after he began trying to cover it with heavy makeup and bandages and shield it from cameras with his other hand. Observers have also raised concerns about swelling in his legs and his appearing to doze during public events.

I don't think the extra aspirin is causing his bruising.

Let me unpack this a bit. He has been taking the high dose for years, only no bruising until recently. Of course, the reason now is aspirin use, not shaking hands too much. JFC, what a maroon.

High dose usage can cause liver disease. It may also cut the fat in the liver. So it is a mixed bag.

like this one from Mayo Clinic:

Side effects and complications of daily aspirin therapy include:

-- Stroke caused by a burst blood vessel — While daily aspirin can help prevent a clot-related stroke, it increases the risk of a bleeding stroke. A bleeding stroke also is called a hemorrhagic stroke.

-- Gastrointestinal bleeding — Daily aspirin use increases the risk of bleeding in the stomach or intestinal wall. If you already have a stomach ulcer, have liver disease or use other blood-thinning medications, taking aspirin may cause more bleeding. The bleeding may be life-threatening.

If you’re taking aspirin and you need surgery, be sure to let your care team know. They may need to take steps to prevent excessive bleeding. Don’t stop taking aspirin without talking to your team about when to stop and when to restart.

WASHINGTON—President Trump is taking more aspirin than his doctors recommend. He briefly tried wearing compression socks for his swelling ankles, but stopped because he didn’t like them. And he regrets undergoing advanced imaging because it generated scrutiny of his health.

“In retrospect, it’s too bad I took it because it gave them a little ammunition,” Trump said in an interview with The Wall Street Journal on his decision to get a cardiovascular and abdominal scan in October. “I would have been a lot better off if they didn’t, because the fact that I took it said, ‘Oh gee, is something wrong?’ Well, nothing’s wrong.”.....

Trump gets little sleep and has recently struggled to keep his eyes open during several televised events in the West Wing. Aides, donors and friends say they often have to speak loudly in meetings with the president because he strains to hear. Aside from golf, Trump doesn’t get regular exercise, and he is known to consume a diet heavy on salty and fatty foods, such as hamburgers and french fries.

The large dose of aspirin he chooses to take daily has caused him to bruise easily, he said, and he has been encouraged by his doctors to take a lower dose. But Trump has declined to switch because he has been taking it for 25 years. “I’m a little superstitious,” he said in the interview......

Trump denied that he struggles to hear. He also denied falling asleep at recent White House events and said he has always gotten by on little sleep.

The president has sometimes described his medical care inaccurately. He has for weeks said that he underwent an MRI at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in October. When asked about the procedure by the Journal, Trump and his doctor said he got a different form of imaging: a CT scan.......

Of the incident in which Bondi caused his hand to bleed, Trump said, “The ring hit the back of my hand, and, yes, there was a slight little cut,” Trump said. The cut alarmed some who witnessed the exchange, according to a person with knowledge of the episode. It is one of several instances in which his hand has been cut, aides said.

Trump said he applies makeup to his hands after he gets “whacked again by someone.” He added: “I have makeup that’s, you know, easy to put on, takes about 10 seconds.”

TIA stands for Transient Ischemic Attack, which is a temporary blockage of blood flow to the brain, often considered a warning sign for a potential stroke. Symptoms typically resolve within 24 hours, but immediate medical attention is crucial.

...sometimes as part of platelet donations I have to get a top-of-the-hand stick - crazy how much it bruises - you just know something is going on with Trump and it ain't aspirin

I bet he’s had a TIA (or two)..and he’s on intravenous warfarin .. it’s not uncommon to be prescribed aspirin along with an anticoagulant..and that’s why his hands are bruised..

I am not a rat.
I'm not permitted aspirin or any other anti inflammatory meds.
Now, not even Tylenol .... only straight Oxy for pain.

From what I've seen Warfarin combined with aspirin is for those who are a great risk of having another stroke.
The combination is kinda dangerous.

When asked about the scan by the Journal, Trump said it wasn’t an MRI but rather a CT scan. “It wasn’t an MRI,” Trump said. “It was less than that. It was a scan.”

Barbabella said Thursday the CT scan was done “to definitively rule out any cardiovascular issues.” Last month, Barbabella released a memo saying the October medical imaging was of Trump’s cardiovascular and abdominal systems and that both showed “perfectly normal” results. In 2018, Trump had a coronary CT scan that did show some abnormalities — a steady build-up of plaque in his blood vessels, indicating moderate heart disease.

I'm not going to bother to search for it, but when he first said he had an MRI, I suggested it was a cardiac calcification scan (done with a CT scan) - based on the comment about his heart being biologically younger than his age.

This pretty much confirms that. (Note: the scan not only gives a cardiac calcification score - but information about anything else they find. In my case, they found nodules in my lungs and suggested I follow up with my usual physician. I've had those since 2009 (at least) with zero changes, which I knew because I am being monitored for metastasis to the lungs from my sarcoma - but that's an example of what else (other than heart health) might show up in the test I suggested he had.)

President Donald Trump insisted he is in good health in an interview with The Wall Street Journal, saying Friday that he had “aced” a cognitive exam.

President Donald Trump declared in a social media post Friday that he was in “perfect” health, a day after The Wall Street Journal published an interview with him in which he pushed back on scrutiny about his age and fitness.

Trump, 79, is the oldest person to have been elected president. During the interview with the Journal, he dismissed public concerns about his age and health and expressed irritation that the topic keeps coming up. The article mentioned Trump’s bruised hands — which he said is a result of taking a higher dose of aspirin — his hearing and his limited sleep, though he said he still has plenty of energy that he attributed to his “good genetics.”

In the lengthy article, Trump denied that he falls asleep during White House events, adding he has trouble sleeping some nights and usually functions on limited hours of sleep.

“Sometimes they’ll take a picture of me blinking, blinking, and they’ll catch me with the blink,” Trump said about images that show his eyes closed.

The president has appeared to nod off during several events, including at a Cabinet meeting last month in which he appeared to battle to stay awake. In November, Trump seemed to struggle to keep his eyes open in the Oval Office during an event announcing price cuts for weight loss drugs......

Beyond the president’s physical health, the article mentions Trump’s habit of going from topic to topic in speeches and statements, sometimes making factual errors. Often recently Trump has veered off topic, and at times rambled, while speaking in public, including during an event in Pennsylvania aimed at highlighting affordability in the swing state and during his scattered speech in September in front of hundreds of U.S. military leaders at a base in Virginia.

But the president has insisted that he suffers no cognitive decline.

Trump’s former and current physician said they administered the Montreal Cognitive Assessment to Trump, in 2018 and 2025, respectively, and that he had scored “30 out of 30” on the assessments.
