Evita Duffy-Alfonso, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy's daughter, declared that the Transportation and Security Administration was "unconstitutional" after she was forced to wait 15 minutes for a pat-down.
I nearly missed my flight this morning after the TSA made me wait 15 minutes for a pat-down because I'm pregnant and didn't feel like getting radiation exposure from their body scanner," Duffy-Alfonso wrote in a Thursday post on X. "The agents were passive-aggressive, rude, and tried to pressure me and another pregnant woman into just walking through the scanner because it's 'safe.'"
After finally getting the absurdly invasive pat-down, I barely made my flight. All this for an unconstitutional agency that isn't even good at its job," she ranted. "Perhaps things would have gone more smoothly if I'd handed over my biometric data to a random private company (CLEAR). Then I could enjoy the special privilege of waiting in a shorter line to be treated like a terrorist in my own country. Is this freedom?"

(34,674 posts)If you don't like it, complain to your asshole father. This is largely his doing. Or, do you think him being Transportation Secretary puts you above the rest of us? (I'm going to guess the answer to that is "yes." )

(38,282 posts)Security is important and these folks are just doing their jobs. But some of it does seem performative and intrusive.
I have Global Entry and a Known Traveler number (this shows on the boarding pass, so it ought to help). I always inform the agents I have an artificial left knee, so they wave me over to a special scanner where you raise your arms, etc. Of course, the scanner shows metal in my knee (duh). Each time afterward, they call over a female agent (sometimes quick, often not) who then does an ALL OVER pat down, in front of everyone. Really? Why are ALL of these steps necessary?
Maybe her complaint is what it will take to get Daddy to revise the procedures.

(68,983 posts)It is what it is. In this case, if she "almost missed her flight" because it took 15 extra minutes to get through TSA, then that's her fault. She should have gotten to the airport sooner. I give myself two hours to get through TSA for domestic flights, more for international, because it can be a chaotic mess. And I have pre-check.
She sounds like a spoiled brat.

I have often had to step aside because like many female Senior citizens, we need to wear protection from bladder leaks. It's not like we are carrying a weapon on board.

(2,839 posts)Millimeter‑wave scanners do not add to your ionizing radiation dose at all; agencies describe their output as thousands of times weaker than a typical cellphone exposure and not a health risk at screening levels.
Even the old backscatter x‑ray units delivered on the order of 0.030.1 microsievert per scanroughly a few minutes of normal background radiation, and far less than the extra cosmic radiation you get from the flight itself or from a single chest x‑ray.
So in todays U.S. airports, the scanners in normal use rely on non‑ionizing radiation and are considered safe at the doses involved; any ionizing‑radiation systems that existed in the past used extremely low doses, small compared with everyday background and medical exposures.
Also I've had a pat down a number of times, and they were never "absurdly invasive". BTW, Princess Duffy? If you had to wait 15 mins, it could be because Trump/DOGE has cut staff in so many federal agencies, you ever think of that?

(265 posts)pat downs, wands and I went through the machine twice, setting off alarms.
On the third go through, I told the staff, please, let me show you my hip replacement scar.
In Texas, the woman wanted to take me to a private room.
I said no, so in public, she put her hands inside my pants, but over my underwear.
She questioned me as why I was wearing loose pants.
We were gifted a Xmas basket of cheeses and pates and we put them in our checked bag.
When we got home we saw the bag had been opened.
The inspectors had separated the cheese and pates into different plastic bags.
The dogs must have gone crazy over the deer liver pate.
The funniest was when we carried 2 lbs of pastrami from Katz deli in our carryon.
It was called a biomass. They let us take it home.
