US oil companies invested in the extraction of Venezuela’s oil and gas and lost majority control and assets when Venezuela nationalized its oil industry (and also its gold mining, which Trump would live to steal). Trump thinks the US this owns the rights to Venezuela’s oil, and he is likely to destroy the country to take it. Think of the damage US bombs did in Gaza long before any troops were on the ground. Venezuela does not have the military to fight the US, and Trump/Hegseth do not care how many people they kill to satisfy their greed.
