(WHTM) Pennsylvanias former top health official is making national news she didnt ask for this week.
Former Admiral Rachel Levine is well known in Pennsylvania for her work during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. Then she went to Washington, where the current controversy is centered.
Dr. Levine led Pennsylvanias Department of Health during former Governor Tom Wolfs administration before becoming the U.S. Deputy Secretary of Health and Human Services in the Biden Administration.
In addition to her accomplishments in the field, she is often referred to as the first openly transgender person to hold the leadership roles she has held.
TA portrait of Admiral Rachel Levine still hangs in the hallway of the Department of Health and Human Services headquarters, but HHS leaders have changed the name under the portrait to her birth name.

Anyone who might, in any way shape or form, seek to hinder or obstruct the prosecution of these people when this is over needs to go.

Disgusting. This is completely unacceptable and a new low for the Trump administration. This should be changed back immediately.

HHS confirmed on X Tuesday that the department changed the name during the government shutdown, saying that they wanted to depict biological reality.
Adrian Shanker, a former Biden administration deputy assistant for health policy who now is a spokesperson to Levine, called the move from the Trump administration an act of bigotry against her.
Rep. Rebecca Balint (D-Vt.) was among the critics who blasted the move online.
All because theyre all so insecure about their own identities that they have to lash out and continue to fan the flames of these culture wars when Adm. Levine was just doing her job every single day, Balint said on X.
