The IRS Must Be Mostly Automated, I Think...

I did my state and federal taxes yesterday. As usual, I used TurboTax, simply because I have used it for many years. Also, as usual, the process went smoothly and didn't use up a huge amount of my time, since I keep my financial records in order all year.

What surprised me a little, though, was the almost immediate initial processing after I filed online, through Intuit. Further, the taxes I owed were snatched from my bank account almost immediately. Apparently, no human beings were involved in any of that. Thank goodness I didn't have any need to communicate with an actual IRS employee. Things would probably have gone differently.

The State of Minnesota, on the other hand, took a few hours to notify of the receipt and acceptance of my filing.

Does that mean I trust the US Government? Nope. I simply trust that its automated features tend to work just find, so far. I do my best to avoid the need to interact with individual employees. They always seem to be the sources of most issues I have had in the past. Not their fault, but that's how it is.

I filed and was due a miniscule refund. It was processed and in my bank account in less than a week.

Does that mean that *I* trust the government? No. I am still of the belief that humans need to be in charge because automation may work great for a while, but there are always glitches.

I'm also suspicious enough to think it possible that someone controls the AI, and all of a sudden, one day, it may simply not work at all.

I have a checking account in a different bank than the one I use for general purposes. I use that account for ALL online financial transactions. I transfer funds to it, as needed, and move money that comes to it to other accounts immediately. So, there's typically little money in that account that can be taken from me without any action on my part.

A number of businesses and government agencies deposit to that online access account automatically. All subscriptions and other regular bills that are paid automatically also use only that account. I visit the account once a day to check on activity in it. As far as outside organizations and businesses know, that is my bank account. I'm very careful about that.

It seemed faster than usual, but I don't really remember.

So I also think most of it is automated and they only check is something is flagged. When DOGE is through, this may not be the case.

have figured would file near the last minute. Even I, a world-class procrastinator, filed before you did. Imagine my surprise to learn that I had until May 1st because of the Florida hurricanes. I was EARLY.

Good job getting them done MM.

Our income has always been spotty, really, since we're both freelancers. We're retired now, though, so things settle out more normally, I guess.

My refund was in my bank account in about 1 week.
Much to my relief.

A week or two later than usual. I normally would have money deposited in my checking account within 3 weeks. It has now been two months and nothing yet. It is almost $5000 so I am a bit concerned. I never used to worry about it and always liked to get a big refund. My car insurance, house insurance and local taxes are all due in April so getting that refund helps not drain my checking account.

Today I am talking to my old company and getting my withdrawal deductions changed to a much lower rate so I get back as little as possible without owing anything. I simply do not trust these assholes running our country now.

today, by what he thinks was an outside contractor rather than an IRS employee. He had to hold up his driving licence and passport to the camera so the guy could take a screenshot. Once done, he got his new pin and was able to apply for the 6 month extension.
