" I don't pay attention to politics "

Reminded this past week that we are in a bubble here. I spoke with three non maggots who I had thought were paying attention only to find out they were clueless about what trump and the republicans are doing. At this point in time I find that astounding and scary. Please let people know about this site and other fact based sites.

If I had a quarter for every time I've heard those excuses for remaining apathetic & ignorant over the years, I'd have a righteous party!

Welcome to DU.

I don’t know how anyone can’t be bothered to be informed about such a major impact on their lives.

They say whatever political news they do get is from influencers on TikTok. I kid you not.

They think politics is boring, say none of it matters anyway, and think voting is a waste of their precious time (spent scrolling social media). Argh.

They get local coverage. Local people see them and wonder what is up. That is one way to chip away at the apathy and propaganda.

That and having Democrats running for seats at EVERY level everywhere -- retail politics. That reaches people. We are social creatures. If you think "everyone" around you is a Republican, then you are too. Democrats are everywhere -- even if a minority in a given community -- and need to be more visible.

"Breaking through" the deranged right's stranglehold on social media and capture of mainstream sources is an uphill climb. Yes, we must battle that, but the best way to prove the propaganda wrong is to "win" in the real world. Community engagement. Citizen action. Just plain volunteering for stuff and meeting and talking to people.

I remember when it used to be rather boring. Then Newt Gingrich happened and the 24/7 news cycle. Which was then replaced mostly by commentary. In the past, an anchor would get five minutes or so and they listed it as a special commentary.

Back in the day, you could turn on the news and they would just say this shit happened today, decide what you think. Now, particularly "conservative" outlets (and lets be honest, they aren't even conservative anymore), they try to mold how you think.
