According to longtime columnist Holman W. Jenkins Jr., Trump's on-again, off-again tariff threats almost makes it appear he wants to be impeached, with Jenkins writing, "A future Trump impeachment seemed all but guaranteed by last Wednesday morning. It seems only slightly less likely now. It may even be desirable to restore Americas standing with creditors and trade partners."
"No consensus or even significant coalition exists for trying to force into existence a new American 'golden age' with tariffs, which anyway is like asking a chicken to give birth to a lioness. He invented this mission out of his own confused intuition," he accused.
"Nobody in Mr. Trumps orbit actually shares his belief in the magical efficacy of tariffs because it makes sense only in a world that doesnt exist, where other countries dont retaliate," he pointed out before concluding, "The founders never anticipated todays instantly responsive trillion-dollar financial markets. And yet these markets neatly adumbrate the founders scheme of checks and balances, also known as feedback. Mr. Trump, still sane enough to appreciate whats good for Mr. Trump, listened this week to their feedback."

(7,438 posts)to know what evil it would unleash. We worked like hell to make sure it didn't happen... which is one of the reasons why I don't trust the numbers, the people behind the numbers, and the people digitizing those numbers. Not when one pumped billions into the race and had an entire network of satellites with which to do whatever evil was demanded to attain this result. I feel as opposed to this "win" as I was when the SCOTUS appointed our president back in 2000. And that one was pretty cut and dried when the ending was allowed to be attained.

Impeaching him for something they are complicit in can't be a serious call for action by this WSJ contributor.
But these days I'll welcome dissent from any so-called conservative media.

(25,355 posts)There are other places where we could put our energy and efforts more productively, like supporting organizations and individuals who are challenging presidential orders, ICE, etc. in the courts. At least we get some wins there occasionally.

It's sadly a moot point as long as we lack majorities in the House and Senate.

(55,906 posts)He's abusing the law that gives him the tariff powers he's exercising only in an emergency. He lied and declared an emergency that doesn't exist to activate those powers.
That's certainly an impeachable offense, if congress cared to act on it (I'm not holding my breath.)
Oh, and of course, he's violating trade treaties as well. Supreme law of the land. Also impeachable, though again, congress doesn't care.

Maybe real Jesus will come out of the cave next week, and let all his rage out on fake Christians.
With a bunny and eggs to feed the masses. Plus a loaf of bread. Whole wheat brown. MAGA will never eat brown bread. Gotta be as white as press room Barbie. Turn all my water to wine, hopefully a great Pino Noir.
Megan Kelly will stroke at brown Jesus. What the hell. Bring out a Black Santa to celebrate the mascot of the birth of brown Jesus.

(8,721 posts)A simple majority to impeach him in the House is possible, albeit unlikely. But, a 2/3 vote in the Senate to convict him is downright impossible.
There's a far better chance that, once his purpose of transforming the US into a fascist dictatorship is accomplished, he'll get martyred by the 2025 crew.
A dead martyr is more useful than a live, uncontrollable, megalomaniac.

(2,567 posts)He simply made the aims of the clinically insane P25 crowd visible for all the world to see.
He gets forced out through impeachment, death, or resignation, the rot will still be there. Mike Johnson, an outright Christian reconstructionist fanatic of the Rushdoony type, himself is completely repellent. There are too any others just like him in the GOP. They are, in fact, the debased base of the party.
In other words, the worst of it isn't just the billionaire "libertarian" (read fascist) backers like Eloon and Thiel but the religious right nutjobs who want to destroy the entire country because of the completely false belief, whether its leaders actually subscribe to it or not, that bringing about a theocratic government on Earth will help facilitate Christ's second coming. It is a complete misreading of the Bible, but millions of people actually believe in the bullshit promise we need to return to "simpler times" when men were men and women (and minorities) knew their "place."

(22,004 posts)Currently, the GOP is favored to retain control of the senate, with only 2-3 seats being viewed a competitive for Dem pickups.
However, if Trumps continued erratic and impulsive orders on tariffs damages the economy badly enough to the point where the suffering is so severe and widespread that there is a real chance republicans could lose the senate (Dems regaining the house is a foregone conclusion), then you might start to see some significant movement towards impeachment or 25th amendment.
Im not holding my breath.
