WTH?
You say “Trump was gracious to you”? What I don’t understand is why you think this? He might have been gracious to you, but what about all the other people who were insulted threaten and mocked? What makes you think he is now normal? Just because he autographed your list of names he insulted you with? Doesn’t make him normal, period end of story! He has insulted everyone from his own family members to the Pope and that to me is not normal! He is an embarrassment to the world but mainly to the Presidency of the United States! So, before you get a chance to talk about Trump? You must look at your own history of insults! You’re a comedian and he’s the president! And the president needs to restrain himself from speaking in insults!
I must admit that I watched your show in the past but I could care less about what you think, say or what you believed who Trump is! You’re like him in some ways and you should know better because of what he has done and said, or what he does or says in future. It will change, just you think he’s NORMAL!

I haven’t watched his show for several years now. He has become an example of how to facilitate the right wing nuts!

(30,119 posts)Those of you who consider yourselves to be bona fide Democrats need to sever all ties to Maher and his show. Most of us are way ahead of you in taking such well-justified action---Maher clearly hates our guts, and any support for him from Democrats at this point is a complete and utter travesty.

(2,410 posts)Richard Boone, instructs me to do so. One who tells me they're 'way ahead' of me and that Maher hates my guts. Maher votes for Democrats and encourages others to do so. He also supports PETA, who we support annually and is included in our estate plan.
One definition of a "bona fide Democrat" would be someone who is a genuine and sincere supporter of the Democratic Party and its ideals. The term "bona fide" itself means "in good faith" or "genuine".
Here's what some say constitutes a "bona fide Democrat":
• Registered Democrat: They are registered to vote with the Democratic Party.
• Consistent Voting Record: They vote for Democratic candidates in primary and general elections.
• Party Affiliation: They may publicly express their affiliation with the party and are supportive of its platform.
• Active Involvement: Some may actively participate in party activities, such as attending meetings, volunteering, or donating.
• Align with Democratic Principles: They generally align with the core values and policy positions of the Democratic Party.
I check off all 5 boxes.

But he also acknowledged, "It doesn't matter who he is at a private dinner with a comedian; it matters who he is on the world stage." He later added, "Why can't we get the guy I met to be the public guy?"

(23,334 posts)That when he says awful things in public why some people hold a grudge. To Trump this is a reality game show and the stuff in public is just a long con.
That Trump can be gracious off camera isn't an asset. It is a problem. Our lives aren't a game show. The shit he does in public matters a fucking lot.

(2,052 posts)I believe Trump is gracious and generally amicable to world leaders in private. We've heard how "constructive" his private calls with these leaders generally go, like say with Carney in Canada (or Justin before that).
But his public persona completely undoes any progress or calming he could do in private. If anything, that matters MORE because it's what everyone sees and it becomes difficult to smooth it over in private.

(8,666 posts)It would imply that Trump knows the difference in the styles of behavior but chooses the coarse, mean path anyway.
I think Maher's bullshit detector is past its service date.

(13,402 posts)I highly encourage watching it. Maher gave us a good angle on the obvious, charming, clowning, mischievous Trump everyone who lived through the eighties and nineties knows is there. Maher made it clear that he continues to think Trump is likely to do cray cray and rotten stuff in the future.
The wokies on the left and right remain flummoxed by Trump, a Frankenstein's monster they and the haughty, stupid media are mostly responsible for creating. Maher is not the one with illusions.

So, Maher is just telling on himself.

(14,907 posts)I simply pointed out that he tried to normalize Trump and I don’t want to hear that, because Trump is an extremely arrogant man! I said nothing about “hate”! I don’t have a dog! And surely don’t need you to tell me how to feel! Especially when someone is able to get away with insulting you and me along everyone else! Just like you are doing to me! I have my opinion you’re free to express your opinion, but don’t tell me what need to be!
Have a nice life!

(315 posts)"...Bill is not going to (sic) boxed in to some narrow makeshift framework that some progressives think we all must abide by."
I don't think ridiculing him for making nice and having dinner with our brand new dear leader is boxing him in.
He punches down. He attacks just about any minority group as if, IF they would just do fill-in-the-blank thoughtless idea of his, everything would be better or something. It sounds like helpful criticism but really isn't when it uses the rightwing talking points. Blame the victim by not talking much about the actions of the aggressor. It's nauseating.
What he says about married women? Fuck him, the bastard.

(29,476 posts)Israel is committing massive war crimes including the IDF attacking an ambulance crew with their lights on which is also a war crime. Also it seems you bought into right wing propaganda into trans athletes. No one transitions into a woman to play sports, there is very little money into it and the ones against it the most don't even watch women sports which their leagues tend to be very LGBT friendly. I was also in the library recently and I saw a book entirely written in Spanish with the title Latinx so I wasn't sure what to do about it. Right wingers probably want to ban it. Either way is originated as an English speaking word meant to not leave out non-binary people.
I guess you think Bill Maher is a mainstream liberal but he follows people like Jordan Peterson. He has more hate for the actual left then he does for MAGA. He even defended the January 6th rioters saying stuff like the person that was shot for trying to storm the Capitol was a veteran who didn't have time to watch MSNBC that line of argument didn't work on me since I'm a veteran myself (In Iraq for the most part we were careful not to commit war crimes unlike Israel).
I stopped watching him under Obama mostly because he spent nearly every episode bashing Muslims. When someone hates one group they tend to hate others like Bill Maher. Since then he has done things like said the N word and so many other things but he has a cult-like following where he has defenders that defend him no matter what he does while slamming his critics.

Other possibility: one of TSF's flying monkeys wrote up the monologue for him to give and threatened to have his ears beaten off him unless he delivered it.

(1,359 posts)for President Con Job. I stopped watching this so-called comedian during the pandemic when his anti-science, anti-mask wearing, and anti-college education notions came to the surface. His “woke derangement syndrome” became intolerable to the point that he actually started to disgust me. It’s sad that he seems to have more contempt and distrust for progressives than he does for the red cap crowd these days. And no thanks to Bill, for actually trying to normalize the felon; I believe his actual goal was to keep his ass out of prison when the fascists start locking up the likes of Kimmel, Colbert, Meyers and others who have the fortitude in confronting the monster without fear of retribution or the desire to make him seem charming, personable, nice and fucking normal.
