This one invited me to look at my new streamlined statement. My trust in the federal government is non existent. How does one verify that a link they (purportedly) sent you is valid? Here it is.
socialsecurity.gov/reviewyourstatement

I didn't see anything all that new or outstanding on my Social Security statement, or anywhere else on my account, for that matter. So maybe my knee-jerk delete reaction was justified.
I do get occasional emails from Social Security. If you get them, look carefully at the sender. Is it "no-reply@ssa.gov" ? That's one clue that it could be legit, still the safest way is to never click on any links in the email (or in any email, for that matter) and instead, use your browser to manually login to your account.....Social Security, bank, insurance, online payment system like Square or PayPal, etc.

(1,197 posts)The words of the link say "socialsecurity.gov/reviewyourstatement" but the actual link is something vastly different.
Sometimes your browser will show the actual link in the lower left corner if you rest the cursor on the 'link'.
DO NOT CLICK THE LINK!
The words of the email look pretty good but do not trust it.

(18,908 posts)I appended https to the domain "socialsecurity.gov/reviewyourstatement" and went to the webpage.
The address resolves to:
https://secure.ssa.gov/RIL/SiView.action?utm_source=GovDelivery&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=reviewyourstatement
Now, this address PROBABLY is Social Security. Obviously not being in the US, I can't log in or test it further but apart from the amateur-ish discrepency between the link and the actual address (what's the point of telling folk to be careful about URLs?) this may be legit.
On edit: The stupid fekkers allowed me to submit feedback. This is what I sent. Had to mark one star, required field.
Social Security will never send you an unsolicited email or text. Period. End of story. This has been the golden rule for decades.
