FFS. Problem Solvers Henry Cuellar, Jared Golden; Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, and Ed Case all voted for The Save Act

House passes bill requiring proof of citizenship to vote in federal elections

Four Democrats joined Republicans in supporting the measure, which the Senate will need to pass before it heads to Trump's desk for his signature.

WASHINGTON — The House passed a bill Thursday that would require proof of citizenship to register to vote in federal elections in an effort to codify one of President Donald Trump's executive actions from his second term.

Lawmakers approved the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act in a 220-208 vote, with four Democrats — Reps. Ed Case of Hawaii; Henry Cuellar of Texas; Jared Golden of Maine; and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez of Washington state — joining every Republican present in support of the measure.

The legislation, sponsored by Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, would amend the National Voter Registration Act so that states would be required to obtain proof of citizenship in person from people who are registering to vote.

It would also require states to establish a program to remove undocumented immigrants from existing voter rolls and would allow American citizens to sue election officials that don't follow proof of citizenship requirements.

Ron Kind (WI).

Golden in January 2023 was one of seven Democrats to vote with Republicans in favor of H.R.497, the Freedom for Health Care Workers Act, which sought to lift COVID-19 vaccine mandates for healthcare workers.

A day later, he was among 12 Democrats who supported with Republicans a resolution to end the COVID-19 national emergency.

Golden was one of two House Democrats, alongside Representative Gluesenkamp Perez, to side with Republicans in voting to overturn President Biden's student loan debt cancellation plan of 2023.

Golden was the only Democrat to oppose the Bipartisan Background Checks Act which aimed to expand background checks for gun purchases. He was also one of two Democrats, along with Ron Kind of Wisconsin, to vote against the Enhanced Background Checks Act of 2021, which sought to close the Charleston loophole.

In 2022, Golden and Kurt Schrader of Oregon were the only Democrats to vote against raising the minimum age for purchasing semi-automatic rifles from 18 to 21. Later that year, Golden joined Republicans and four other Democrats in voting against a bill that proposed banning assault weapons.

In 2025, Golden was one of 46 House Democrats who joined all Republicans to vote for the Laken Riley Act.

Golden was the only House Democrat to vote with Republicans against the Build Back Better Act.

Golden was one of four Democrats to join with the majority of House Republicans to pass the annual defense policy bill, which included provisions barring Pentagon funding for abortion and transgender surgeries.

Golden was one of 38 Democrats to vote against the United States–Mexico–Canada Agreement Implementation Act.

Golden is one of few Democrats to express a favorable and supportive stance on Trump’s recent tariffs, having previously proposed a 10% global tariff himself.

I loathed Bruce Poliquin and was glad he was defeated, surprised, really, given the redness of the second district. He was out and out corrupt. Many of Golden’s awful votes were made when the outcome wasn’t dependent on him, and I overlooked some as bones he was throwing to the rethugs who had voted for him.

Now I know better.

but of Congresswoman Gluesenkamp Perez in particular I wonder if she could vote under this law, and if so, is it due to a passport or a real ID?

She eked out a victory against frigging JOE KENT, who unseated Jaime Herrera Beutler in the primary. Beutler dared to criticize MFer and J6.

Hopefully this bill dies in the Senate. Cloture and all...

10. We finally got a Democrat in to replace a slightly moderate Republican.

The Republicans didn't support their congress woman who had held the office for 12 ears and won every previous race by a wide margin. Why? In 2020 she had said that Trump wasn't fit to hold public office. her with a MAGA devotee, Pro-pregger, anti-environment , imbecile. Some Repubs even joined with the Dems to keep him out of office.

Alas for us, our new Democrat Rep tuned out to be another sell-out who has again sided with the MAGAS.

Disappointed? Oh, yeah.

I volunteer on voting rights/voter protection efforts. Non-citizens do not vote

The House GOP majority passed a ban on noncitizen voting, which (a) almost never happens; and (b) is already illegal. It’s worth understanding why.

The SAVE Act would:
- make it harder for Americans to vote
- address a problem that doesn't exist
- impose new burdens on state election administrators

House Republicans passed it anyway.

The GOP duo pitched legislation that would require documentary proof of citizenship to register to vote. The absurdity of watching two notorious election deniers pretend to be deeply concerned with the integrity of elections was a detail the political world was apparently supposed to overlook.

Soon after, House Republicans followed through, introducing the “Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act” (or “SAVE Act”). As NBC News reported, that same bill has now passed the chamber.

The legislation, sponsored by Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, would amend the National Voter Registration Act so that states would be required to obtain proof of citizenship in person from people who are registering to vote. It would also require states to establish a program to remove undocumented immigrants from existing voter rolls and would allow American citizens to sue election officials that don’t follow proof of citizenship requirements.

The measure cleared the chamber on a 220-208 vote, with four Democrats — Reps. Ed Case of Hawaii; Henry Cuellar of Texas; Jared Golden of Maine; and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez of Washington — voting with the majority. No GOP members opposed the bill.

The principal concern with the legislation is that it’s a solution in search of a problem. To hear Republicans tell it, policymakers must prevent noncitizens from voting, which probably sounds reasonable. In fact, it’s so reasonable that the SAVE Act is redundant: There are literally zero locations in the United States where noncitizens can vote in federal and/or state elections.

GOP lawmakers have also argued that legislation is needed to curtail the scourge of noncitizens who are already voting. Except, Republicans have gone searching for evidence of this problem and found effectively nothing.....

What’s more, as The Associated Press reported last month, state elections officials — from both parties — have expressed practical concerns about how these costly proposed procedures would be implemented and paid for. The same article added, “Voting rights groups have said married women who have changed their name could have trouble registering under the SAVE Act because their birth certificate lists their maiden name.”....

The bill now heads to the Senate, where Republican Sen. Mike Lee of Utah is championing a companion bill. The odds of the legislation overcoming a Democratic filibuster, however, are poor. Watch this space.

During the Texas voter id litigation back in 2012, Greg Abbott as AG argued that non-citizens were voting but could provide no evidence of this because non-citizens are too scared to break the law by voting
