The Senate Resolution on the Canadian Tariffs just passed!

A big win for Democrats!

Trump tried to bully the Republicans into voting NO but it didn't work. They stood firm and voted with the Democrats.

On this one issue - good job by Rand Paul, Mitch McConnell, Susan Collins & Lisa Murkowski.

Four Senate Republicans join with Democrats to rebuke Trump tariff policy in key vote

Four Senate Republicans joined with Democrats on Wednesday to deliver a rare bipartisan rebuke to President Donald Trump over trade policy.

The Senate adopted a resolution by a vote of 51 to 48 aimed at blocking the Trump administration’s proposed tariffs on Canadian imports. The four Republicans who voted with Democrats were: Sens. Rand Paul, who cosponsored the resolution, Susan Collins, Mitch McConnell and Lisa Murkowski.

The move amounts to rare bipartisan pushback against Trump in the GOP-led Senate and comes after Trump criticized the measure and urged Republicans to vote against it.

House GOP leaders are not expected to take up any efforts to rebuke Trump over tariff policy – and even moved earlier this year to prohibit such a move. But House Democrats believe they may have found a way to circumvent GOP leaders on the issue of tariff policy.

Rep. Greg Meeks of New York, the top Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said on Wednesday that he plans to introduce a privileged resolution to force a vote over tariffs, a procedural move that can be used to bypass leadership and force floor votes.

Dems should just step aside and let Trump/GOP destroy themselves. When the economy tanks as a result of his tariffs - only then will voters have clarity on how terrible Trump is. Polls showed that voters believed the economy was Trump's strong point. Should that advantage erode, it's curtains for Orange Man.

This is how you rally the electorate. Challenge Republicans in the House to stand up like the 4 did in the Senate. There isn't a down side to this, even if we lose, we win. Besides, we're going to need Republicans to stand up to Trump at some point.
Blocking tariffs is a very popular rallying point with citizens of all parties, and is a good starting point in generating majorities to reign in Trump's imperial presidency.

At Mitch McConnell he bears the lions share of the blame for trump not going away and now he thinks he can make it right? I mean by all means speak out but where was this in 2021? Its because he is retiring and no longer cares. Which means all this time he hated trump and what he was doing but stood by for his own power. The redemption arc is a tough sell for me.

It's one of the few issues where he has reasonable thoughts...

https://www.yahoo.com/news/gop-braces-potential-defeat-trump-181932167.html

“Trade is a good thing. Trade is proportional to prosperity, and so tariffs are bad economically,” he said. “It’s a terrible idea to run a country by emergency where representatives to vote on raising or lowering taxes.”

Paul said tariffs “are bad for the country, bad for prosperity, bad for the economy.”

“Our Constitution was very specific that taxes — tariffs are a tax — taxes originate in the House, come to the Senate and then go the president,” he said. “They don’t just go to the president and no one else. What kind of system would it be if all of our taxes and laws were passed by one person?”

S.J. Res. 37; A joint resolution terminating the national emergency declared to impose duties on articles imported from Canada.

Trump can only legally impose tariffs on Canada due to the emergency declaration so this resolution would end Trump's ability to to unilaterally impose the tariffs. That's a big deal.

So Now they pass bipartisan legislation which directly repudiates a Trump policy priority -it's an action of significant substance - pretty much as strong and meaningful of an action as it is possible for them to take at this point given their minority status across the board, and you still complain.

And this will have no impact on any Republican's election chances. McConnell is retiring, Rand Paul voters aren't going to be pleased he voted with Democrats and Collins & Murkowski are known quantities at this point. This vote will be meaningless to their voters.
