Whatever is in the water down in Florida says that voters there WANT to see Health, Education, their Medicare and Social Security get cut or eliminated. That they SUPPORT what Trump and his co-President Musk destroying this country and economy.
SHAME on you, Florida! So sorry! I am NOT spending any money in your state.

(3,133 posts)from what I understand they are from a pretty red county. Fine's margin may grow.

(2,028 posts)It'll be less than Waltz's win last November but it will grow. With 42% of the vote in, John Well led something like 52-48 and now the vote has doubled and he trails 54-45, so, that should tell you that most the vote is GOP leaning. Fine will win by 15+ I suspect.

(24,046 posts)If he and the congressman had won the district by three points instead of thirty, he would have looked elsewhere.
Florida 1 will probably have a similar outcome, the R winning by a surprisingly slim margin.

Florida Dem
(46 posts)All of you on here slinging unhinged vitriol at Florida need a reality check. Kamala Harris received 4.7 million votes in Florida. That's more than New York, Pennsylvania Georgia, etc. Without looking, it's probably the third or fourth highest democratic vote total in the entire nation. Yes, it's true that the government sucks here and it is now a solidly red state.
Shithole state, eh? Using that same logic, you would need to apply that label to most of the other states in the United States. It's not just Florida folks. I hate to break it to you, most states are currently red, as is the country. The point is that there are millions of Democrats who live here. And I dare to say that most of us do not consider it to be a shithole state.
Wiz Imp
(4,606 posts)Harris got very close to the same number of votes in New York & Florida, despite Florida's population being 3.5 million higher. The 5th largest state is PA and their population is almost 7 million smaller than NY. Saying more people in Florida voted for Harris than most other states isn't the positive statement you think it is.
The issue is that large areas of the state (like the 2 Congressional Districts with special elections) actually earn that shithole designation pretty well consistently voting for Republicans over Democrats by like a 2 to 1 margin.
Florida Dem
(46 posts)Um, you completely missed my point. And also, failed to address what I stated. Which again, were the fact that most other states in the United States are red States and voted Republican. Yet, no shithole designation. That is why we are where we are now as a nation. It is not ONLY Florida.
Second, millions of Democrats live here and there seems to be very little recognition of that when people all over this board are calling it a shithole state. This is casually done without distinguishing between the millions of Democrats that live here and the right-wing government. Okay, the government here is a shithole government, just like MOST of the other states in this country. So all of those other districts are shithole districts in shithole states, correct?
BTW, I live in one of those shithole districts that you mention. I guess you can't control yourself and it just brings you some sort of internal pleasure to continue to apply that label to areas of Florida. I live here. I'm kind of an expert. And I can confidently state that this is far from a shithole, having lived in other parts of this country during my life. I'll think of you while I'm having a beer on the sugar white sands along the crystal clear waters of the Gulf of MEXICO.

(4,606 posts)shithole states regardless of their size. That include Texas which is significantly larger than Florida. People aren't singling out Florida, their ire is directed at every state that votes for Republicans by huge margins - including Texas, Florida, Ohio, Iowa, Kansas, South Carolina, Missouri, Indiana, Montana, Nebraska, Utah, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Dakota, Kentucky, Alabama, Tennessee, Arkansas, Oklahoma, North Dakota, Idaho, West Virginia & Wyoming.
By the way, I'm from Pennsylvania and I would absolutely call at least 2/3 of the counties in this state as shithole counties - including the county where I grew up. They absolutely deserve the designation.
Florida Dem
(46 posts)I appreciate the polite follow up and clarification. And believe me, I'm beyond frustrated watching Florida go more right-wing every year.
I'm trying to potentially look at tonight as a positive with the closer margins in these bright-red Florida districts and the humiliation of Musk in the Wisconsin Supreme Court race. I'm hoping the Dem over-performance is a harbinger of good things to come in 2026.
Wiz Imp
(4,606 posts)While Dems still lost, the gains they made since November were huge and consistent with special elections elsewhere around the country. Good reason to be hopeful, especially when you add in the Wisconsin SC win tonight!
To be clear, I agree with you that people shouldn't tar entire states as shithole places when there are strong Blue pockets in even the reddest of states. If you noticed a couple other comments I made in this thread, I criticized people for trashing the entire state of Florida and said they should focus their anger on the areas where the special elections were held - those are the areas (and others with similar voting patterns) that are responsible for allowing Trump and DeSantis to win there and make things miserable for millions of people.

(3,133 posts)A lot that was probably due to Trump, but some of it might be because the GOP nominated a truely terrible candidate. The other special election tonight will probably be a lot moe demonstrative of how unpopular Trump is.

(4,606 posts)This Congressional District has consistently voted for Republicans over Democrats by a 2 to 1 margin. Expecting the Democrats to win in such a district is totally unrealistic. (The margin in this election WILL be much closer than typical for the District). Then to follow it up by slandering the entire state of Florida, the vast majority of which had no vote today, is particularly ridiculous.
