I worked for a public school district and did not pay into SS for 20 years. (I *did* pay into it for almost thirty years with other jobs.)

Here's a link to the SSA site's explanation: https://www.ssa.gov/policy/docs/program-explainers/windfall-elimination-provision.html

I got hired by the State while working for the Feds so I quit.

I went back to work for the Feds again in 1991 as a temp.

I paid into SS when I was a temp. but not otherwise.

They sent me a check when I quit in 1995.

That check was not a whole lot but had I left it, I might have gotten something out of it via WEP.

Oh well.

Too late now. I had no idea at the time = none.

You might want to stop talking about this.

Your withdrawal should have been reported to SS when you retired, and your SS should have been subject to a WEP reduction all of these years. Because it (apparently) wasn't reported and you didn't have a WEP reduction, you don't get a one-time partial repayment of the reduction back now.

BUT - if you should have (and didn't) report it when you started drawing social security, you may have been getting more than you were entitled to through the end of 2023. If that is the case, they can still go back and ding you for overpayments for every year from when you started drawing SS and the end of 2023. (In other words, what they don't know won't hurt them - but it MIGHT hurt you - especially if you're not only talking about it here - but also in real life where someone in SS might be able to connect the dots).

It’s the WEP (Windfall Elimination Provision), which reduced SS if you had a Government pension, that has been eliminated. Biden signed it in early January, but in all fairness, it had widespread bi-partisan support.

When my husband started getting his SS retirement, I used the online calculator to determine
if I would get any benefit, but because of the offset my amount was a negative number so I didn't apply. The law provided for retroactive payments of 12 months. Since I had never applied my retroactive payout was 6 months. I received that a couple of weeks ago. I moved it from checking to saving as soon as it hit the bank.

Republicans gotta be thirsty for a way to pretend they support Social Security, especially after firing half of the SSA. Taking credit for a predecessor's accomplishments is as traditional as blaming them for your own failures.

The WEP elimination provision was passed in December 2024, retroactive to 1/1/2024. Trump/Musk had nothing to do with it.

They are taking credit for automating the calculation process and getting the checks out in March for the majority of recipients, rather than the much slower process originally anticipated.

At a job where the social security tax was withheld; however, the benefit was reduced by a pension from State or local government (called the government pension offset).

The Social Security Fairness Act was passed to remove the government pension offset and allow those retirees who paid into Social Security for 10 years to now receive benefits (and I think, past benefits denied due to the government pension offset).

The act was retroactive to 1/1/2024, so only one year of past benefits denied). Once the complicated dust settles for my spouse, she will get back 12 months of the 21 months they had denied her.

At age 70. I'll continue to work until they fire my ass, but I have no choice but to start collecting my SS pension.

I have been privileged to be employed for 50 years, with the exception of a 10 month stint in 2023. It gets harder to find employment as you grow older. Nevertheless, I found a brave company willing to hire me. A French company, of course.
