The massive earthquake in Haiti occurred on Jan 12 2010

Haiti is still suffering

Casualty reports from the mainstream media, some citing government sources, varied from 30,000 to 500,000 for the whole country. The official estimate settled on between 220,000 and 250,000 killed, including an estimated 170,000 buried in mass graves.

The great Kingston earthquake took place in Jamaica on Jan 14 1907
The city Kingston was destroyed with over 1,000 deaths - considered stunning back then.

I spent several weeks there after the event on Search and Rescue. We managed to save 7 people that otherwise would have been trapped forever. Still the survivor guilt was real when there were so many more that we couldn't help.

That mission impacted my mental health more than all the others combined (including 9/11, Katrina and Surfside included)

What a horrible tragedy on a massive scale. And it continues to linger even now as you say.

I still think about it often.
