How long will it be till someone comes up with an alternative to Facebook that is good enough to cause another mass exodus?
I shiver with delight at the possibility.

(1,263 posts)There is no real alternative to FB in terms of keeping contact with family and friends. Sorry, but for that reason I am not going to give up FB. I have photos I share with family and friends, and I like the different NON-POLITICAL groups over there. It is the best way to maintain contact. I have Instagram, but I rarely use it. I don't care for and don't use TikTok.
I still use Twitter/X because there are groups and topics I like to follow having nothing to do with politics. I am also on Bluesky.
Not everything is about politics.

(24,795 posts)Bluesky is definitely NOT comparable to FB. There is a FB-like alternative out there I just started exploring called Tribel but it remains to be seen if it will grow into a viable alternative.

(2,619 posts)Bluesky has emerged as a sane alternative to Twitter. Now if only someone would come up with a sane alternative to Facebook, then everyone could dump facebook like they've dumped Twitter.

(3,351 posts)Thankfully.
They allow the user to control their own experience to a remarkable degree. Nice to have a woman as CEO. Seems to have a more pro-social outlook than the South African billionaire does. I think a number have people have expressed willingness to pay for an account, but it's still free. And no advertising! Refreshing.
As for FB, it has such a large number of users that it is unequaled in organizing, unfortunately for my desire to get rid of it. I manage several organizations' Facebook pages and groups, so leaving is not an option unless I'm willing to stop volunteering.

(3,947 posts)BlueSky and DU are working for me. facebook is mostly ads or sponsored shit, lots of those do misdirects and try to scare you (VIRUS!!!) into calling their call center.
And now with this latest, no fact checkers and backing down on DEI bs, that is enough

(455 posts)I have 3 ideas
1. He is just purely sucking up to Trump, this is way too simplistic he lived through the other 4 years of Trump and he's got a lot more money and power now.
2. He's got whatever billionaire disease that hit Musk, Thiel and Bezos. He's always been a little creep but this stuff seems way to quick for me. Musk has been on the path to total insanity for years.
3. He see's that even though half the US hates Musk and has abandonned X the other half loves his and is embracing X and now Zuckerberg figures this is what can save FB/IG. Maybe he's anticipating Musk burning out very soon and X collapsing so he wants to be positioned to pick up the refugees.
Honestly I'm not sure which is true but I'm leaning towards #3

(15,058 posts)Without all the "Surveillance Capitalism" which requires massive tracking of everything you post, and auctioning your data to advertisers, instead of giant data centers the size of a small town, small operations can work fine. (and AI is exponentially increasing the power and computing demand, for reasons that few people outside the porn creation world can make use of)
Craig's List started out with a computer or two in Crag Newmark's closet.
I don't know much about it now, but get this: Craig sells ads to users with something to sell. All the others sell users to advertisers, and in the most disreputable way.
Surveillance Capitalism

Abstract
In this masterwork of original thinking and research, Shoshana Zuboff provides startling insights into the phenomenon that she has named surveillance capitalism. The stakes could not be higher: a global architecture of behavior modification threatens human nature in the 21st century just as industrial capitalism disfigured the natural world in the 20th.
Zuboff vividly brings to life the consequences as surveillance capitalism advances from Silicon Valley into every economic sector. Vast wealth and power are accumulated in ominous new behavioral futures markets, where predictions about our behavior are bought and sold, and the production of goods and services is subordinated to a new means of behavioral modification.
The threat has shifted from a totalitarian Big Brother state to a ubiquitous digital architecture: a Big Other operating in the interests of surveillance capital. Here is the crucible of an unprecedented form of power marked by extreme concentrations of knowledge and free from democratic oversight. Zuboffs comprehensive and moving analysis lays bare the threats to 21st century society: a controlled hive of total connection that seduces with promises of total certainty for maximum profitat the expense of democracy, freedom, and our human future.
With little resistance from law or society, surveillance capitalism is on the verge of dominating the social order and shaping the digital futureif we let it.

(10,893 posts)each privately owned and with terms of service that permit changes and sales at-will by the owner and otherwise minimizing any rights of users (including free speech or privacy rights).
Imho, we might as well all have saved ourselves a lot of trouble and stayed on MySpace or Friendster, unless and until we actually have a platform owned and controlled by the users (like a credit union, which not only charges no fees to maintain a checking account there but actually pays interest on the balance and generally treats members much better than commercial banks do).
