'They just got my uncle': Immigration arrests spark fear among farmworkers in Central Valley

Maria Casarez was washing dishes at noon Tuesday in her three-bedroom duplex, tidying up before her four children arrived home from school when her husband’s nephew called.

“Acaba de agarrar a mi tío — inmigración,” he said. They just got my uncle, immigration.

The two had been talking at a Home Depot parking lot, less than a mile down the road from their home in Bakersfield when Border Patrol agents showed up and began asking questions.

Casarez dashed to the scene, where she said she saw a dozen agents. “It was ugly,” she said. They had already taken her husband away.

The Border Patrol operation near Bakersfield lasted for several days and netted 78 arrests this week, raising alarm bells across the Central Valley, where a largely immigrant workforce helps harvest a quarter of the food grown in the U.S.

So, it wouldn't surprise me if there are pockets of MAGA in there waging their own little wars against immigrants, knowing that the ~ten days till inauguration won't be enough for them to be stopped and/or disciplined.

Border Patrol, ICE, local PDs, FBI agents...they're all just champing at the bit, waiting for Trump.to give them free rein to go after immigrants.

“The Biden administration on Friday issued sweeping extensions of deportation protections for hundreds of thousands of people from Sudan, Ukraine and Venezuela in a move that makes it almost impossible for President-elect Donald J. Trump to swiftly strip the benefit when he takes office,” the New York Times reports.

I think this is where it is headed (depending on the locale): extortion.

If farm workers got together and agreed not to go to work for a week, the impact would be swift.

Of course, Magats are so nuts they’d want farm workers arrested as much for not working as for working here without papers.

I hope they do it. I sure would support it.

I guarantee that if you tried to call a general strike you’d be sorely disappointed in the response. Face it, most people with jobs would go to work, putting themselves and their families first. No, it has to be a desperate interest group. Like farm workers. It would be pretty typical though for people with little skin in the game to try to associate themselves with the effort.
