Former fact-checker at Facebook fact-checks Zuckerberg on his current lies.

Last edited Sat Jan 11, 2025, 03:22 PM - Edit history (1)

No, social-distancing measures were never part of a plan to “install Sharia law” during the coronavirus pandemic. Nor does Nancy Pelosi’s husband own Dominion Voting Systems, the election-software company whose product “glitched in favor of Biden” in the wake of the 2020 presidential election. And SpongeBob SquarePants’s pineapple under the sea, while prime Bikini Bottom real estate, is not, in fact, located on Little St. James, the private Caribbean island once owned by Jeffrey Epstein.

I came to the above conclusions after hours of painstaking research, from scouring the then House Speaker’s financial-disclosure reports to cross-referencing satellite images of Little St. James with the address on the fictional fry cook’s elusive boating license.

Between late 2019 and the spring of 2021, I was part of Facebook’s third-party fact-checking initiative, spending my first job out of Columbia Journalism School, and most of the pandemic, debunking viral claims that were seen and shared by thousands before they ever came across my desk.

Mark Zuckerberg, announcing the end of fact-checking at Meta this week, claimed that “fact-checkers have been too politically biased” and have “destroyed more trust than they created.” As a former fact-checker, I’d like to rule that statement as false, unless Zuckerberg sees the truth itself as “too politically biased.”

Conservatives are now at liberty to spread all manner of disinformation and lies on social media, along with rightwing hate speech.

And as private entities social media are at liberty to do nothing at all about rightwing disinformation and lies.

Conservatives will continue their war on facts and the truth, neither of which are ‘political.’

It's a two way street. Magats can post all the lies they want, but then a dem can ask a magat when they stopped beating their wife.
Or, your new girlfriend goes to junior high with my daughter.

Everyone needs to start posting bogus crap on the platform. LOTS of it. Anything and everything. Make it so worthless to anyone that it will finally die and release the majority of this planet from their addiction.

Contradict these people with truth posts. I think it is on us to know what the real facts are and encounter those people in large large volume numbers.

You can throw in a piece of wood and a few might nibble on it for a bit.

You toss in some red meat and watch what happens.

The truth is of no interest to those people. Sensational conjecture is what gets clicks. Clicks are what get you the ability to be heard in the pool. Clicks can even make it seem like you are in charge of the pool. Until the pool turns on you. Which it always seems willing to do.

The pool needs to be filled in. Regardless of its uses in the beginning, it is now just too fetid and serves little purpose other than to sew discontent and falsehoods.

But, that is just my opinion. It also serves little purpose.

Decline to pay for companies that refuse to use them. Vote with your dollars.

There are more of us than them and they will eventually feel it in their pocket books and have to bring back fact checking.

“fact-checkers have been too politically biased” and have “destroyed more trust than they created.” As a former fact-checker, I’d like to rule that statement as false, unless Zuckerberg sees the truth itself as “too politically biased.”

This also points out the flaws Zuck had built into his scheme, which was somewhat upside down. The policy prohibited fact-checking politicians when they were the very people who most needed to be fact-checked. So Zuck's solution is to take a very flawed system and make it worse. This will likely have some serious unintended consequences for Zuck's pocketbook, as it should.
