LA Fire Chief naively baited by a reporter

I was watching the live stream from one of the LA local TV channels (GDLA+). A reporter interviewed LA's fire chief Kristen Crowley, asking her baiting and leading questions trying to get her to blame and criticize the mayor. The reporter also tried to get her to acknowledge that prior cuts led to preventable harm.

The chief naively took the bait, breaking comradery during a crisis, and laying blame on city hall. She did not know how to break off the interview, while the reporter pecked away at her like a vulture on a carcass.

The chief was wrong for two big reasons.
1. She criticized the mayor during a crisis instead of focusing on immediate actions going forward.
2. She allowed the interview to be used to publicly blame others.

I couldn't tell if the Chief lacked sophistication in dealing with reporters or really wanted to shank the mayor. To me it looked like a sophistication issue because the chief is appointed by the mayor.

The chief and the mayor were supposed to appear together at a press conference tonight and they changed it to a written statement.

The interview and people's perception of how the fires were handled likely mean that Bass' political career is done, at least at the executive level.

You can see the interview here:

The very beginning of the interview is clipped off on the video above. You can see the entire thing here. Go to 12PM.

I checked in at 6:38PM PT on the video and they are discussing it.

1. The reporter took advantage of a stressed out and most likely sleep deprived official. Not professional

But the reporter did her job. Maybe it's a cautionary tale for anyone when dealing with reporters.

3. This sounds more like a set up hit job than naivety.

The reporter obviously wants to feed the RW hit jobs on California politicians, but this fire chief seems to be fully aware of that and is going along. It does look like their target is the mayor, at a minimum.

The fire chief got aggressive because she anticipated an attack from the mayor or was even insulted by something the mayor already said.

Yes, it does looks like it was a CYA move on the fire chief’s part. This interview has been widely discussed on the local news. There was even a round of gossip that Karen Bass fired the chief, but Bass guffawed at that during a presser. Glad you posted this — good find.

a lot even in the last day. This interview was part of the verbal wars going on now and is very public. Karen Bass and the fire chief appear together and say their main goals are the fires in front of them and immediate concerns. But there is obvious tension, and it looks like the fire chief is covering her butt by bringing up the budget cuts.

It does look like Bass will be blamed for a lot, but I don’t even know what to think yet. This is definitely a public spat now, tho. The fire chief’s interview was talked about a lot on the local channels and spectrum news.

12. Thanks, Cha -- I'm not really close to the fire areas or affected, so

my input is mostly from a lot of local news. There was a post here from someone who is a Hollywood resident who had an apartment in the area and others who are more directly affected that had great insight. But thank you! The back scene political dynamics are interesting!

of my family from all over the USA & Hawaii were there in and out of her home for days. My sisters & daughter who came in from Portland stayed in an Airbnb close to Whole Foods not too far from Brentwood.

I told my Niece before I left that I liked her Neighborhood. I ran all up and down the hills there.

It's a good thing you're not closer to the fires. but you check the local news and that can be informative.

Thank you so much! 💙
