Germany and France Issue Warning to the Slobfather Over Greenland
German Chancellor Olaf Sholz issued a warning to Donald Trump on Wednesday, responding to Trump's inability to rule out the use of military force in his quest to acquire the Danish territory of Greenland, or to issue punitive tariffs if Denmark doesn't relinquish control of the arctic island to the United States.
Sholz maintained that the inviolability of sovereign borders has been settled since World War 2, and that Trump's comments on U.S. expansion have been met with "incomprehension" from Europe.
"The principle of the inviolability of borders applies to every country, regardless of whether it lies to the east of us or the west, and every state must keep to it, regardless of whether it is a small country or a very powerful state," Scholz said, referencing the violation of the sanctity of borders brought by the Russian invasion of Ukraine, adding, "borders must not be moved by force."
"A certain incomprehension became clear regarding current comments from the U.S.," Sholz said after meeting with several European leaders and the head of the European Council.
