NYC was fortunate because of the existence of the Armstrong Tower across the Hudson in Alpine, NJ - many broadcasters were able to transmit from there after WTC1 collapsed.

The structure was also used as a temporary transmitter site for some of New York City's television stations after the collapse of the World Trade Center, including its transmitting antenna, following the September 11, 2001 attacks.

10. I wonder if there are back up towers? Mainly because of Hollywood.

But the terrain is horrific.

I lived in CA 1967-1969 at Vandenburg. Radio at night was non-existent. (Well at least to this 11 year old it was non-existent).

I don't think digital (cable) relies on the transmission towers. (I hope)

"Mount Wilson Observatory @MtWilsonObs 1h
As you may have seen on the news, the Eaton fire is approaching Mount Wilson. There are firefighters on the grounds but the power is out at the Observatory so communication is limited. We are monitoring the situation and will update here as we can. Thank you for your concern."

There are very strictly enforced fire clearance rules but this dry wind combined with the drought overcame all barriers.

And manage the forests so they don't get overgrown. The wind however was just overwhelming, nothing like we have ever seen. Last year the state approved new fire hazard maps, some of these areas were NOT in those zones.

Hell, I got the email from the California Department of Insurance on what we can probably expect in losses today, and it's still isn't over.
