What is up with this guy? They tortured Fetterman when he got elected.

(14,984 posts)Does affect the personality, especially if he was somewhat a borderline centrist to begin with.
I don't know Pennsylvania politics, but I do have experience with Privileged Majority Grievance Derangement Syndrome.
It can affect even liberal and progressive folks who benefit from being a majority gender or race without acknowledging the privileges inherent in being "the social norm" in the organizational hierarchies they operate in.
It takes a lot of unpleasant self-awareness to realize when the self-centered "don't you dare ignore my needs or take my stuff" feeling hits one during the consideration of sharing opportunities and benefits with different or minority population.

(6,399 posts)and no one on the Republican side ever finds a conscience and goes independent, much less Dem? It's really disheartening to see you can't trust people to stay on the side of truth, normalcy, dignity, public service, etc.
Polybius
(21,324 posts)He then caucused with Democrats, costing Republicans the Senate. Lincoln Chafee switched too.

Good thing for Fetterman U.S. Senators receive excellent mental health care. That's probably why he wants to hang on to his job.

Damn Mason and Dixon were bribed by the quakers to shift the line south.
Does that mean Fetterman is not the legal Senator for Pennsylvania?
Just asking.
Just having a reasonable conversation.

(6,670 posts)* actually, never mind... I do like being the one (or one of the many) who expressed our doubts.
I'm feeling more disheartened than "disappointed". It's hard to be disappointed over something that I was kind of expecting in the first place. --- Oh well. It's not like we had control of the Senate anyway.

(7,406 posts)No. It is not a responsible discussion. It is a distraction.
A 100% planned distraction to take our eyes off the coming shit storm of
fascism, cryptocurrency scams, theft of everything by Trump, and that the
election was dirty as shit brought to us by Musk, the GRU, and the biggest
criminal in American history is now going back into the White House.

(6,670 posts)* and, actually, I was "happy" with Manchin because I knew that WV couldn't do any better than that. (At least he caucused with the Dems and helped us to keep the majority control).
But when it comes to PA, we can definitely do better. I'm sympathetic to his health and mental issues, but I feel like Lamb would have been a better choice and a stronger voice and someone who could better represent the interests of their constituents... and someone who would help to strengthen and unify Democrats rather than what we're seeing now.
Unless he resigns, we've got a bit of a wait before the next election. And, honestly, I don't see him running again... or being able to win a primary challenge.

(3,269 posts)I don't know why people write off states. There is no reason why a progressive could it win in West Virginia.
Jesse Jackson came to Appalachia in 1988 and he kept coming back.
When Robert F. Kennedy stopped for lunch in Bluefield, he was likely engaging directly with the local community, showcasing the Kennedy campaigns commitment to grassroots outreach. These kinds of stops were characteristic of the Kennedy strategy, which relied on personal connections, compelling speeches, and an energetic presence to win over voters.
The West Virginia primary ended up being pivotal, as John F. Kennedys victory there dispelled doubts about his ability to win in non-Catholic states and helped solidify his path to the Democratic nomination. Roberts efforts in connecting with local communities like Bluefield played an important role in that success.

(3,269 posts)What else from the past should we jettison so that we can be "realistic" and "pratical?"
How has being "realistic" and "pratical" worked out?
It stopped being 1968 long, long ago, back when people decided to be "realistic" and "pratical." We have lost ground ever since.
I for one refuse to live in that "real world" you are talking about.

(717 posts)My MIL went from being the sweetest, kindest grandmother to almost mean to her grandkids. Not physically, just in the things she would say to them. We had to stop letting her babysit for us.
My FIL went from being gregarious to quite introverted. He killed himself about five years after the stroke.
Both did not become better people after their strokes. Fetterman, thus far, has done the same.
Sad.
