The more we react to his gaslighting, the more it works to his advantage.
React to the important stuff, not the gaslighting.

(60,803 posts)We do not know if it is an empty threat.
It is quite naive and even foolish to dismiss Trump's rantings out of hand.
I used to write reports with risk assessments to determine if people were likely to follow through
on threats and were indeed dangerous.
You gather your data and make a judgement.
Let's look at the facts, data, evidence.
1. Trump has aligned with the world's autocrats. Russia has invaded Ukraine for "national security" reasons.
China plans to do the same with Taiwan for the same stated and bogus reason.
2. Trump is a psychopath and believes everything in the world belongs to him.
From a psychological standpoint he is quite capable of believing other countries belong to him and taking action.
3. The best predictor of future behavior is past behavior. We could write a book about all the things Trump has stolen that do not belong to him.
4. Trump is a long time drug user, mentally ill, and has dementia. He is capable of making bad decisions, being impulsive, and doing outlandish things.
6. Trump is very dangerous and quite capable of carrying out these plans. I don't know if he will actually do it,
but his psych profile indicates he certainly could follow through on his plans.

This is a guy who changes opinions in the same half sentence.
I don't think you see the politics here. But I am still your friend.

(60,803 posts)I have been a political junkie since JFK ran for president.
And one of my degrees is in political science.
So I think that many decades of being a close observer of American politics
and having a college degree in the field makes it impossible for me to ignore politics.
It is possible he is loving the attention with his outrageous remarks.
And likes the shock factor. And has a political agenda about all of it.
I am just saying from a clinical and science standpoint he is quite capable of doing
what he is threatening.
To insist his threats are not serious goes against facts and science.

(13,117 posts)And it is radically important that we keep that in mind. Granting this figure imaginary omnipotence and powers - that he does not in fact have in his grasp - serves no one.

(60,803 posts)He said J6 "would be wild."
He is being honest when he says he will get revenge on his enemies.
He is being honest when he says he admires Putin and other fascist leaders.
He was honest when he said during the campaign he didn't need votes.
This is just a partial list.

(38,421 posts)Claim a degree (again) and having written some reports to gain credibility for this ludicrous claim. All thats needed is common sense and a modicum of insight into how this guy works, which a poster on this thread has nailed quite sufficiently.
To that claim on Greenland, Canada, et al, I would say yeah you and what army?
Who does he think he is? General ONeill? ONeill was a military man who thought he could conquer Canada.
I hope he keeps it up. He is showing the world what an utter fool we have at the helm.
The United States is not to be feared or respected. It is the laughingstock of nations.

He was honest when he said he would purge Dems in the gov't and get revenge on his enemies.

(13,117 posts)on the part of any kind of leader - let alone one that stands atop the the mountain ...
And NOT important by any measure of the likelihood of any of it coming to be. And that's a distinction that probably should remain uppermost. In that - the OP has a valid point. We do nobody any good rushing around pretending that we really believe that the military is going to invade Greenland. Not gonna happen. And meanwhile - this guy is just LIVING off all the frantic energy. Don't feed the beast!

(2,311 posts)Trumps bizarre press conference today would be an example.
Nonsense about renaming the Gulf of Mexico and retaking the Panama canal are intended to deflect from Trumps already failing lame duck second term.

(126 posts)and the majority of media fall for it and serve his insatiable desire for attention. This was my first thought when I saw that he called another of his so called press conferences today and it was the day that President Carters solemn procession by caisson from the Naval Memorial to the Capitol and the ceremony following would be in the news. He pathetically cannot stand it unless it is all about him. Like Mary Trump says: Too much and never enough .

(57 posts)Trump isn't a master of anything, many on the left and most on the right believe he is saying something when he isn't. He says "look, a boogeyman," and we turn and scream, "That isn't a boogeyman, that's just a puppy, the right says, "that's not a puppy, that's a boogeyman," and we go back and forth ignoring the serial killer with the AR-15 standing behind us.

(30,040 posts)I think oh this greenland, canada, panama BS is just deflection, but ... is it? how can we really know? he's so bent there is literally no way to know how the next several years will play out. will the Courts throw enough wrenches into his plans to keep us fed, housed, and whole? Will he throw his political enemies into gulags? Will he shut down every avenue for democrats and the opposition to organize and resist his worst impulses? Will we even have access to news sources that will report the truth?
how do we know? what is the important stuff?
I'm reading The Book Thief. it's a story that takes place in Germany during the Nazis. it was a devastating time in history. It was sort of a coincidence that I picked up this book at this time, and maybe if I'd known more about what it was I wouldn't have read it at this time. But it is a good book, engaging enough to carry me past the foreboding toward the ending. I still don't know if that ending will be everyone dies or just almost everyone dies. What I cannot do is avoid applying, or comparing this history to this actual historical moment in our history.
There's an old saying that history repeats itself. For years the parallels have been noted and discussed, and here we are. He's going to be president again, after having tried to take down democracy violently just 4 years ago. What will he do now without any guardrails in the form of a cabinet that respects the Constitution and the law? They won't be there this time around. only sycophants and oligarchs. Now add in the richest megalomaniac in the world as his insane sidekick.
How do we know?
