An investigation of Livelsberger’s searches through ChatGPT indicate he was looking for information on explosive targets, the speed at which certain rounds of ammunition would travel and whether fireworks were legal in Arizona.

Kevin McMahill, sheriff of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, called the use of generative AI a “game-changer” and said the department was sharing information with other law enforcement agencies.

“This is the first incident that I’m aware of on U.S. soil where ChatGPT is utilized to help an individual build a particular device,” he said. “It’s a concerning moment.”

In an emailed statement, OpenAI said it was committed to seeing its tools used “responsibly” and that they’re designed to refuse harmful instructions.

Could he have done it without ChatGPT? Perhaps. OpenAI says so. But he did anyway.

1. Interesting, although Sheriff should know an old fashioned search would work as well, maybe better.

2. Don't know the details, but it shows that any ChatGPT "safeguards" weren't smart enough to figure what was going down.

Intelligence not intelligent enough to smoke out misuse.

Interestingly, a Google search might have resulted in ads for lethal goods and info. And if LE bought or requested Google search info, as they sometimes do, who knows?

Or maybe he worried about that.

Says he wanted to limit damage to persons other than himself, while getting attention, so maybe that's why. He might have suspected Google of leaking info abs OpenAI of not leaking any.

Just speculating.
