Why Does Trump Want Greenland?
January 7, 2025 at 7:47 pm EST By Taegan Goddard
Because of higher temperatures, an estimated 11,000 square miles of Greenlands ice sheets and glaciers have already melted in the past three decades, an area roughly the size of Massachusetts.

(171,726 posts)picture of your buddy! My girl Maggie died last summer. She was our first rescue, and we really mourned her and her delightful presence. So we now have Bella, a yellow lab. I forgot how to post pics here, but she's a love, quite a bit younger (about 3 years old) and is in love with my better half. She's got some learning to do yet, so he's the trainer.

(5,745 posts)Trump thinks he's more than doubling the land mass of the US! Egotistic Fool. Then comes the attempt at rationalizations to make it seem rational, that is, less crazy than it is.
He likes the election maps that make everything look red.... When most of "his" area is farmland and desert.

(75 posts)The neoconservative Hudson Institute has been pushing for this. They warned last year that 'NATO is not prepared for possible Russian aggression in the Arctic, noting that Moscows nuclear submarines could travel under the ice along the coast of eastern Greenland without being detected'. Trump and his cohorts also don't want China getting a foothold in the Arctic, since Russia has been working with it. Foreign Policy hawks want Pituffik beefed, totally under the control of the US, and in no way hindered by the 1951 defense agreement with Denmark. They also want to base the US Second Fleet there.
FP published a Hudson Institute's article about that last year https://foreignpolicy.com/2024/04/01/nato-russia-arctic-steadfast-defender-2024/
"Whoever holds Greenland will hold the Arctic. It's the most important strategic location in the Arctic and perhaps the world".
Walter Berbrick, U.S. Naval War College (https://www.politico.com/story/2019/08/24/trump-buy-greenland-1474349)
The idea isn't new. It was proposed under the Truman admin in the 40s.
''The committee indicated that money is plentiful now, that Greenland is completely worthless to Denmark (and) that the control of Greenland is indispensable to the safety of the United States,' Hickerson said in a memo.
-snip-
He said purchase of Greenland would give the United States ''valuable bases from which to launch an air counteroffensive over the Arctic area in the event of attack.'
On June 20, 1946, Secretary of War Robert Patterson weighed in, writing to Undersecretary of State Dean Acheson that ''it might be a good idea to take prompt action toward securing from Denmark (even to the extent of purchasing the entire island, if necessary) the military rights which have been outlined by the Joint Chiefs of Staff.'

Any long term mining claims are good BS cover. But honestly Trump wants a land grab because he can slap his name on it historically. He isn't a complex deep thinker.
He should find some place that wants to be bought.

(533 posts)"... In 2023, the Danish government published a report that detailed Greenlands potential as a rich deposit of valuable minerals. The Arctic island has favorable conditions for the formations of ore deposition, including many of the critical raw minerals.
The melting ice in the Arctic is also opening up a new strategic asset in geopolitics: shorter and more efficient shipping routes. Navigating through the Arctic Sea from Western Europe to East Asia, for example, is about 40 percent shorter compared to sailing through the Suez Canal. Ship traffic in the Arctic has already surged 37 percent over the past decade, according to a recent Arctic Council report.
... Mr. Trump has repeatedly called climate change a hoax. But one of his former national security advisers, Robert C. OBrien, suggested that its consequences are one of the reasons that Mr. Trump is interested in making Greenland a U.S. territory.
Greenland is a highway from the Arctic all the way to North America, to the United States, he told Fox News. Its strategically very important to the Arctic, which is going to be the critical battleground of the future because as the climate gets warmer, the Arctic is going to be a pathway that maybe cuts down on the usage of the Panama Canal.
