Not much left, friends

The news ain’t the news.
Companies giving up on DEI? White men will run the table in C-suites, upper management, academia — and it will happen fast.
Courts are playing games to undo an election of a Democratic judge in North Carolina.
It ain’t just trump. It’s Germany, Britain, Canada, Austria, the Netherlands.

It’s uncontrolled pollution, it’s AI bots instead of customer service, it’s skyrocketing rentals instead of homeownership.
It’s robbery of Social Security, fast or slow; it’s possibly devaluation of the dollar via US default on debt or US opting for crypto.
It’s lawsuits by state governments against the federal government, which will be another way to pay off GOP allies and nourish the kakistocracy.
It’s racism, xenophobia, forced religion, new barriers to travel, medical bankruptcies and fake or nonexistent medical care.
Shortages, extreme inflation, and staged chaos are probably coming.

It’s protection OF police, high costs to get body cam footage, wide zones to prevent videotaping police abuse of citizens. Police brutality without recourse. Domestic abuse? A family problem, be nicer to your man. Can’t feed your kids? Maybe go beg at the church.
It’s the truth going up in smoke, facts down the memory hole. Information only in the hands of the few.
It’s Eileen Cannon being able to stop Jack Smith from publishing a report, Eileen who will surely become a Supreme Court justice in the next trump term.
It’s going to be laws rewritten to screw the “blue states”, the big cities, the professionals, the liberals, the single moms. It’s going to be like Hurricane Katrina, “heckuva job Brownie” letting people drown in attics while the federal government pretends to be incapable of solving a logistics problem. Or maybe they won’t even pretend; maybe they’ll just say ‘let California burn’.

People are day-dreaming to imagine that it won’t be bad. When Germany went Nazi, there were countries and populations willing to resist. Right wing is everywhere, and media is more or less dead.

Davos is coming up. The 0.1% and its hired hands will be setting agendas, carving up the spoils of war. Because they’ve won. Not anything so small as “the GOP” or even “trump” — and sure as hell not trump’s base — but a global collection of fascists/authoritarians/misogynists who have nothing but disdain for democracy and disdain for the masses. When they meet in Davos, or wherever else, there won’t be real media listening in and reporting. The next phase of plans will get outlined in those places, out of sight of the clown car in Washington.

Ideals of democracy, equality, justice? I think the next generation is going to have to fight very hard to claw back basic rights.
Reality is going to suck.
Sticking your head in the sand is not helpful, and neither is stuffing our heads with details, because our compatriots don’t give a damn about facts, they have no power anymore anyway (whether they know it or not), and they are dumb enough to be distracted by the flame bait, clickbait, and kabuki theatre that the right wing is good at.

I guess it’s time to find a few friends, become more resilient, downsize, diversify, focus on small things that bring joy, and don’t count on anything.

Granted, trump is insane but all of those countries you list as being taken over by the Nazis...no, a couple maybe, but most know Russia is looking to expand westward after trump let's them finish off Ukraine. They will stick with NATO as it's their protection against Russia and trump, depend what stance his insane ass takes.

if he hold true to his promises to

1) End Birthright Citizenship , first to be used against Immigrant's American Children,
ultimately it could be used on all of us undesirables.

2) pardon the Violent Criminals who gouged cops eyes out and beat them with
poles etc . At that point any Violence used on behalf of Trump will be legal .

Steel yourselves and get a passport , some may want/need to leave for whats might be coming.

My "dream" was to find a bunch of like-minded people and all of us chip in and buy into a hotel or apartment complex. Each individual would have their own apartment, but there'd be a community center where everyone would gather, a communal kitchen for those types of gatherings, etc. Separate, but together. Not a commune, but a community.

It's a really nice dream to me... but when I mentioned it to friends or someone else I'd be having a conversation with, they'd look at my like I was nuts. I guess sole-ownership is just too ingrained in our culture, or we've totally lost the idea of pulling together in a close knit community and what that really means for everyone. I mean, we could even have our own library, etc. I just think it's such a neat idea...

That way, as we grow older, we're not alone any longer. And we'd have kids and older grandkids to help us out on the heavy stuff, I'm imagining. I love the idea of growing our own food, and then making a deal with one of the local farmers for fresh meat. Support local!

Yes, I've had the dream all my life. It just makes so much sense! The choice of privacy in your own place or company in community spaces. I have one idea of a rotunda in the middle of four walls of apartments/condos. Inside the rotunda is one of those large open air fireplaces. Smores, anyone?

Pretty much exactly your setup. Unfortunately most of the existing cohousing communities are very pricey. Some are starting to retrofit existing buildings, rather than build new, which seems like it could be cheaper in the long run.

I always wanted to buy a house on about 5 acres of land, undeveloped. Use some of it as a critter rescue, and leave the rest just woods to walk through and meet the local wildlife. A garden in a nice sunny spot would be really cool, too. I'm doing the Aero-hydro thing, because I have TONS of trees in this little bitty lot. No sunshine hits the ground in a good enough spot for a garden. It's all shade... which does make the yard tons cooler in the summer, tho.

One of the things I've noticed since retiring 3 years ago, is I'm at loose ends most of the day. I mean, I didn't trade in the day-in/day-out routine of paid work, just to do housecleaning, unpaid, day-in and day-out. My physical issues limit a lot of what I can do. But I also notice I get lonesome and lonely much of the time. I was always such a go-getter at work... pulling meetings together, constant contact with instructors and students, out-of-country computer help calls. I didn't realize how much people contact I had in a day, until it was no more. And I find now, I miss being around them -- a very few at a time, of course. And no idiots! Hubby and I can say we are definitely growing older together - as I yell and answers me back "What did you say?" Funny how we always hears trump name come up in a sentence, tho! (LOL)

Five acres is superb. I like to "dream big" so I have a larger land buffer between me and other humans

But I too think of having a ton of animals, and maybe even a proper and formal rescue, as I have had friends do that. And the trees.... The walking the land and meeting wildlife.... Yep.

My sister and I used to talk of getting a large piece of land, we called it a compound. Family would all have a plot, and like-minded people we could find. Much as most of you describe, communal areas, shared work and expenses.

It would be wonderful, or at least start out that way. But laws can change, people come along that want to run everything their way, and in the end it wouldn't work very long. I do believe humans are better served to live in small clans, rather than the overpopulated mess we have now. I believe things would be better if the women and elderly were in charge.

I wish we had enough native blood to pull the land together as a tribal nation, but Trump would ruin even that. We're too mixed to get any single recognition, too.

I'm grateful that I own my land and my worn-out trailer. It's not much, the taxes are still pretty low, all the utilities we really need is electricity. If I can, I'm going to try to get some solar going, to at least power the well pump and maybe some heat source. Always wanted to be fully off the grid, but even with tax breaks and such, we're just too poor to afford it.

29. Europe rebelled against autocratic kings and nation states throughout the 1800s
Thu Jan 9, 2025, 11:04 AM
Jan 2025

The people won to some extent, though many fled to America. Revolutions rolled across Europe in 1848, I'm not familiar with them all. But they rebelled against Napoleonic rule, working conditions. By the 1870s protests had reached Italy and Garibaldi led revolts against Bourbon rule and for independence of the still weak Italian state. The Irish fled the potato famine, as their lands were seized by royal families for estates. Dickensian England was not a place for the poor. That's one we should study, confiscatory policies by the state is on the menu. Yet autocrats continued in many places. Tsarist Russia, Germany, even if some leaders were enlightened and improved education. It was still about money and power and control.

It's our turn. We've had 250 years of good government, we have history's lessons to inform and guide us. Tyrants fall when the people stop listening and figure out what to do. It's like clockwork.

Fascists and robber barons on steroids while the climate crisis attacks through disasters that wipe out whole areas randomly and seaside communities sink. This is what we face?
We are focusing on our non-MAGA friends and family, our dogs and rescues, quality time, and memories.
I won't be quiet, though. Already, my outspoken nature has pruned the friends list quite a bit. I'm not sorry at all.
Excellent post. Thank you for taking the time to write it down for us, and thank goodness for this space.
