(4,822 posts)Knew an old fire fighter/fire jumper in Montana. He fought fires all over the west, but drew the line at Southern California. Said "I'm not stupid or suicidal" then talked about the plants there and how fast they could explode because of the oily sap some of them have.

(61,347 posts)I also remember that it's a crown fire habitat - IOW everything burns.

(15,195 posts)This is the smaller, original Getty museum, not the huge museum in the Sepulveda Pass off the 405.
Still a terrible situation, but the main museum is outside the threatened area.

(17,454 posts)being reported as catching fire. That place is so spectacular. Its separate from the main Getty Museum off the 405 freeway in L.A. (Brentwood/BelAir area). Wow, this is so scary.

(17,454 posts)highway. nestled in a crowded Malibu / Palisades area. This is so worrisome. Irreplaceable antiquities.
I feel so bad for everyone there. About 30,000 evacuated.

(38,097 posts)The structor is double walled and sealed up with another system designed to protect the artwork. Heres hoping a cosmetic coat of paint is all the is needed. That, and a serious lanscape makeover.

(17,454 posts)free entry and it is such an experience. I took my mom there for her 1st time last June and she was overwhelmed with how beautiful it is. Smallish, but built just like its named a villa. She didnt realize there was another Getty besides the big one. (Her late husband didnt like coming to LA area, so she missed out until now).
So sorry about the grounds that pool area is so stunnng. Glad no one is hurt
.and that artwork!

(4,822 posts)For those who have never been there, the villa is a replica of one in Italy, owned by Ceaser's father in law. It is an astoundingly serene place to view parts of the Getty Collection. It is right off the Coast Highway, but the view from there is only trees and ocean. Amazing place.
My heart keeps breaking.
Yes, many homes lost, but since I was 9, I could see there were places where people just should not build, and up further in those now burning hills is one such place. People who have resources but build where there are enormous risks, well, it is hard for me to work up much sympathy for them. They will be OK, if they had the sense to evacuate. They will be able to get new homes.
But the art, history.... that really hurts.

Edit (add): Biden's out there and his schedule has been changed.

The winds are blowing towards the ocean at least, a very very small consolation I guess.
This is going to be a horrific night.
