After the role it played in helping Trump in 2016, many of us deleted Facebook. Now all the Meta Platforms, including Threads, is being transformed to help Trump in 2025. It is time for us to go. I'm out by end of the week.

(7,002 posts)I cancelled Prime. I never did threads.
But I've been using FB and videos to learn watercolor... that's pretty much all that's on my feed. and the few HS friends I've kept in touch with.
But this might nudge me. Dammit.

(4,949 posts)One must be diligent choosing them. Compare several and check comments, if any, for videos that are actually helpful.
I pull them up on my tablet so I can have them with me when I do stuff like cleaning out dryer duct, changing car cabin air filter and light bulbs/fuses specific to the models I have.
Used to be good with some tougher car part replacements back before cars were all full of computer stuff. Even replaced a water pump with only flashlight for illumination. Replacing the alternator had to wait until daylight.

(4,949 posts)Mine, which I really liked due to the many layers of excellent filters, died. Usually, I can fix small appliances, but was struggling. The video said the company has made the devices in such a way that even he and his staff of pros can't do simple repairs, or even replace belts! And they tweak things with every production run, down to different types of tiny bolts on the same parts, to thwart repairs.
It's really amazing what one can learn from You Tube videos, and maybe a bit scary with some of the stuff that's out there. But it's a great place to hunt up old songs you are trying to remember lyrics from!

(7,002 posts)I think I just need to adjust my own searching algorithm.
And then figure out who I need/want to stay connected with on FB and figure out the best way.

(31,801 posts)Sign up with a YouTube account and you can save your favorite videos.
FB videos have buffering issues and it's hard to pause and restart them etc.

The propaganda factor is off the chart here in the USA.

(4,949 posts)Have a decent bunch of contacts for local political activity, and our local Indivisible FB page is a good news source. Have found a lot of physical therapy videos to be helpful in my old age.
I zap the ads and block any idiots who make it into my field of vision. Also, the Make Trump Kittens Again browser extension makes the view more pleasant

(3,121 posts)I like to call them out for the suckers they are. I like to rub TSF's stupidity in their faces. I like to remind them and the rest of their families and friends how stupid they are for voting for such an incompetent, immoral, moron. But I guess I could close my account before TSF is inaugurated. I still have trouble believing this is all happening.

(11,605 posts)Don't understand why anyone wasted sooooo much time on it. It really annoyed me when they filled up my email with alerts even though I turned off that feature seven times. It never helped in any relationships and merely kept acquaintance up to date on my life, which felt kind of creepy.
Every privacy feature on Facebook would require resetting about every couple of months. It was just a huge time sink with very little reward.
Any of the best features of Facebook are duplicated on less work intensive platforms from videos, hobbies, messages, sales, politics and community groups. And they don't sell your privacy data to Russian and Pedo Trump agents.

(9,173 posts)leaving Facebook would be a problem. All my friends, who live all over the country, are there and that is where we socialize and I get to rant to the choir. It would be hard to drop that. The real problem though is I am a wildlife photographer and I have a wildlife page with a few thousand followers that look forward to my photos every day. Maybe I could get them to follow me if I set up a separate photography page on Bluesky if that is allowed. I don't like FB but I feel I am caught in its grip.
I'll just have to figure it out and make a change.

(797 posts)I spend lots of time posting factual information in a public fashion, as well as, Heather Cox Richardson's daily Letter From an American.
It is one of the ways for me to fight back against disinformation so I feel attached to Facebook. I have signed up for bluesky but not taken the time to figure out how to use it and I don't use any other social media. DU is my go to for information.

(28,880 posts)I also use a very, very helpful local ferry page, which has alerts for cancellations and how long the line is. And my book club schedules our events there.
I'll continue to use it for those things. The algorithm won't make any difference to me.
I think Zuck might backtrack a little on this anyway, but we'll see, I guess.

(39,206 posts)In addition to hides and blocks, the positive ways to train your newsfeed algorithms get the posts you value -- you just click "like" on them and/or "follow" trusted sources and politicians, etc.
I get plenty of EFF, BBC, Guardian, Penzey's, David Miles Hogg, Joe Biden, Democratic Party, Techdirt, Slashdot, English Literature Society, Native American Pride, Philothoughts-Arts & Philosophy, Classic FM, Reuters, Nobel Prize, National Geographic, etc., etc, along with FB friends.
It's about consistent liking and hide/blocking, and within a day (log out for a while, then log back on) and you get the feed you want on Facebook.
it is just clarification of what they have always been
it just disgusts me how many people got sucked into the FB borg

(2,892 posts)I want to drop kick Facebook so I can kick Mark Phuckerberg where it will hurt most.
It is hard to do when family and friends still post there, and a few public personalities that I like also post there.
Currently, I try to limit my time there, and also zap any ads or sponsored pages which they constantly shove in my face and didn't ask for.
I have really had it with their deliberate throttling of any information that they don't like. I think their so-called fact checkers suck!
I am spending more time here and on Blue Sky.
To quote our dear Aristus: I love you all.

(4,668 posts)I'll be deleting mine, as well. I've been playing around over on Universeodon, but will probably switch over to Bluesky, since that seems to be where all the great people are headed. After declaring it's okay to call women property and things, and to call trans and non-gendered individuals "It" that's enough of that. The world is going to grow ever more courser, but it doesn't need my assistance and support in doing it.

(3,398 posts)Not much for personal reasons (photos of grandchildren and so forth).
I manage or help manage 4 nonprofit pages there. One, the League of Women Voters of my county, is entwined with the state organization and national organization. Unfortunately it is an easy way to connect with a lot of people quickly and for free.
It's a very good publicity tool. I feel stuck.
