The thug element of the Repuke party made its point. With 3 votes for another candidate and 6 members not answering the roll call when their names were first called, they demonstrated that they have the necessary 9 members willing to petition Johnson to vacate the Speakership if he crosses them.
I thought 9 members would vote for a different candidate on the first round and change to Johnson on the second ballot (well, 8 anyway) to make this point. But they did it a different way but made the same point.
With dozens of Republican members unwilling to pass a budget or raise the debt ceiling without dramatic cuts in spending, there is no way Johnson can govern without Democratic support. And the rogue element of his party will punish him for compromising the Dems.
Good luck and pass the popcorn.

(2,179 posts)6 Repuke members did not vote when their names were called, even though they were on the floor. 3 members voted for someone other than Johnson. the number 9 is significant because that's the number needed to get the full House to vote to vacate.
But after the full roll was called, the 6 abstentions voted for Johnson and after a lengthy delay and a meeting with Johnson behind closed doors, which included a personal phone call from Trump, 2 of the 3 who voted for another member switched.
The number 9 is not a coincidence. Those members sent a message to both Johnson and Trump that they want their agenda of draconian spending cuts and no compromises with Democrats or nothing is safe, not Johnson's Speakership or the budget or the Debt Ceiling.
Today's vote was not a victory for Trump or Johnson. It's a prelude to the coming chaos.
