Tesla Is Cooked - Unless Donald Trump gives the company lots of government subsidies -- The American Prospect

https://prospect.org/infrastructure/transportation/2025-01-03-tesla-is-cooked/

The vast majority of Elon Musk’s wealth consists of his large stake in the EV manufacturer Tesla. When Tesla’s stock price nearly doubled following the election, his wealth, at least on paper, soared to over $400 billion.

But that spike plainly has nothing to do with Tesla’s business fundamentals, which are increasingly shaky—and its future prospects are even worse. The company’s best-selling models are extremely old by auto market standards, other automakers are putting up stiff competition—Chinese ones in particular are poised to massacre Tesla in the developing world—its only new model in half a decade is a flop, and Musk’s right-wing antics are poisoning its sleek, environmentalist brand.

Absent more assistance from the incoming Trump administration, on its current track Tesla will be an also-ran in the global EV market within a decade.

The Financial Times reports that after years of very fast growth, in 2024 Tesla’s sales fell slightly for the first time since 2011. It is still the largest EV seller in the world, but only by a tiny margin—China’s BYD, which saw a huge increase year on year, sold 1.76 million EVs, against Tesla’s 1.79 million.

I'm not in the market for a new car but even if I was, Tesla would be last on my list.

The Model Y was the world's best selling car, and stocks keep going up. I don't think they are going away anytime soon.

...any real environmental advantage since they are dependent on primary energy sources and supplies of materials that are not sustainable.

As the case with all issues in energy and the environment, the issue with sustainability is both the source of primary energy and material. Handwaving and shell games only make things worse.

The biggest problem Tesla has right now: the first Model Y he ever sold and the one that’ll show up on a truck in front of your house if you buy one today are pretty much exactly alike, except that the first ones were white and the new ones are gray. Compare that to, say, a Toyota Corolla where they’ve completely restyled the car several times over its marketing lifespan. He’s going to have to release new models of his cars if he doesn’t want his customers going somewhere else for their next car.

It had a huge makeover, and love the elimination of all stalks (turn signals, parking/drive, etc.). Supposedly, the 2025 Model Y is stalkless as well.

Doing away with tangible buttons and knobs makes it harder to operate a vehicle. It's annoying on a device when I am not driving, but in a car I need to be able to adjust things without moving my eyes.

It's a lot easier when the turn signals are on the wheel. Your left hand is right there. I don't move my eyes.

with the design.

I've rented Tesla's lots of times and I don't think I would want to drive one that is stalkless.

Because soon ( late Jan) will be able to do all your banking on Twitter. In the next few yrs you will be able to buy a $20 thousand dollar robot to walk your dog and clean your house. Maybe the robot will be driven to the store by a Tesla & buy your groceries- come home and cook and serve your dinner. Then run your bath and wash your back.

Of course the software/hardware can also assume the OFF position inadvertently - we know glitches happen.
