New York (CNN) Costco is battling an anti-DEI wave with a stern rebuke to activist shareholders looking to end the warehouse retailers diversity ambitions.
Walmart, John Deere, Tractor Supply and other companies are changing or walking away from diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) policies. But Costco believes DEI helps its treasure hunt shopping atmosphere, and it is standing behind its efforts.
Costcos board of directors unanimously recommended that its shareholders vote against a proposal brought by a conservative think tank, the National Center for Public Policy Research, that would require Costco to evaluate and issue a report on the financial risks of maintaining its diversity and inclusion goals. The group criticized Costco for possible illegal discrimination against employees who are white, Asian, male or straight.
The National Center for Public Policy Research did not immediately respond to CNNs request for comment.
Costco has a chief diversity officer and a supplier program that focuses on expanding with small and diverse businesses. It also donates to organizations like the Thurgood Marshall College Fund that serve minorities and underrepresented groups.

(36,190 posts)Not all different treatment is illegal. For example, it is discrimination - but not illegal discrimination - to treat someone with blue eyes differently than someone with brown eyes. On the other hand, it is illegal discrimination to treat individuals differently based on their race.

As far as singles shopping, there are many things that a single person can get. .the gas. the pharmacy, eye care and glasses, clothing, books, floral, computers, kitchen needs, mattresses, rotisserie chicken, the 1.50 lunch. . .

(2,689 posts)According to most conservative ideologies the right of a business is absolute. They (should) have the right to hire and fire anyone they want, using any criteria they want.
To force business to hire according to what government wants should be anathema to any conservative.
But of course conservatives have always been hypocrites.

(6,751 posts)We can vote with our hard earned dollars and reward those businesses and corporations like Costco that share our values. ✊🏼 wish we could resurrect the BuyBlue website that kept track of these things to facilitate such economic democracy.

(473 posts)It can be difficult to figure out and keep track Of which companies I would prefer supporting. I know there is an app I have heard mentioned, but I would prefer an actual website, rather than an app that I have to install on my device.

(6,751 posts)There once was such a one stop website called BuyBlue. Alas it was ahead of its time and shuttered in 2007.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/BuyBlue.org
Id like to see it reincarnated, as the need for it, given the massive amount of corporate cash being funneled into Agent Oranges criminal coffers, is clear since we dont need to be inadvertently subsidizing the felon and the criminal organization that is todays Rethuglican Party.

(25,495 posts)It was almost perfect fitting but I did have a tailor adjust a couple of areas. So a $400 suit ended up being just under $200. Supported a progressive corporation and a local business in one fell swoop. And now have a banging blue suit.
Give online clothes a try. It might work.

I still love it, and I'm starting to go back there more and/or use Instagram to order just what I need so I'm not temped on other purchases (there is A LOT in those stores!). Anyway, definitely a great alternative to Amazon if you have one in your area.

(10,777 posts)They do mail order, and even non-members can order some things online.
And while you always have to research the things you purchase, I feel like they try to curate the things they offer to a greater degree than the Amazons and Walmarts of the world.
FWIW, I favor Walmart over Amazon now if the price is the same. Lesser of two weevils.
