President Biden spent Christmas Eve signing new bills into law approving everything from the countrys official bird to protections for children in youth care facilities.
Here are a few of the most pressing pieces of holiday legislation:
Stop Institutional Child Abuse Act
Celebrity singer and actress Paris Hilton has spent months pushing for a federal law that will hold treatment centers and care facilities serving youth accountable. She made frequent appearances on Capitol Hill to encourage lawmakers to pass the Stop Institutional Child Abuse Act in the House and Senate.
December proved to be a fruitful month as the Senate unanimously approved the measure and the House voted 367 to 33, sending the bill to President Bidens desk. He signed the act into law on Tuesday, securing a political victory for Hilton, who expressed potential interest in serving as an elected official.
Stop Campus Hazing Act
Biden also passed a law that creates disclosure regulations for federally funded higher learning institutions, requiring them to include reports involving campus hazing in their annual security report. The bill was sponsored by Reps. Lucy McBath (D-Ga.) and Jeff Duncan (R-S.C.) in the House in addition to Sens. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) and Bill Cassidy (R-La.).
Hazing is frequently discovered to be a part of college pledging processes for on campus fraternities and sororities. More than half of college students are involved in some form of campus hazing, according to North Carolina State University.

(29,796 posts)Center are frightening. I understand why Hilton acted out after going through it.
She's one that's grown far more than most will admit and has been passionate about changing the requirements for these centers.

(25,240 posts)Id rather not see celebrities enter politics , regardless who they are.
Its a bit of a toxic mix - support for political acumen ? or popular appeal on the social strata ?
Especially if they are monetarily powerful , like pResident musk
Im happy for her that she is supportive of a cause , I just dont think that equates to an opening of a political career.
But Im just an old dinosaur not active on Twitter , TikTok or bluesky etc.
no longer with the in crowd
so what do I know ?
I accepted being shown the door with Bidens exit . Its in others hands now.

(6,110 posts)Its good that Paris Hilton supported that
I already knew about that. However, I do not think I would support her to be in politics.

(85 posts)She released a video during the '08 campaign taking down McCain and supporting Obama. She played to her stereotype, but fully tongue-in-cheek. It showed a measure of intelligence and wit.
Not meant to be a show of support or not, just an historical occurrence.
