(1,420 posts)He had been in the British army in a Calvary brigade. He and my grandmother and their kids (including my mother) immigrated to Canada in the 20s. So, he wasn't in the Canadian army and they owed him nothing but to told him to get a doctor somewhere and sent him away.

(93,420 posts)I have never been thrown by a horse but a couple friends have and they were lucky to have only one or two broken bones and nothing as serious as that.
Hope he is able to recover well.

(71,950 posts)a very tall horse abruptly decided it was time to return to the barn.
that was enough. my sister, tho, still rides in her 60s even after a fractured vertebrae from a fall.

(93,420 posts)In Montana, they're some tough old gals in their 70s and 80s, whom I know personally, who still ride and sling their own saddles. Hell, I couldn't even heft a saddle these days... a big pile of leather.
I love to ride but don't have much opportunity these days... pushing 70 myself. If I had to do all the tending and whatnot, I wouldn't be able to handle it.

(7,910 posts)Ive been thrown off a couple times riding bareback. Amazingly enough, not on the jump course which I actually survived in one piece.
I was a kid though, weighed far less than an adult and was very flexible as most kids are compared to grown ups. But I remember one girl dying after the horse fell on her.

(22,659 posts)as a kid. VERY docile and gentle horse, being led the whole time by the owner of the horse. That was ENOUGH for me. I hated being that high up, and acutely aware how far down it was to the grown if i were to fall. I never rode a horse again.
