"SNIP................
Rachel Bade: After the House passed a shutdown-averting spending bill Friday, a very relieved Speaker Mike Johnson proclaimed to reporters that President-elect Donald Trump was certainly happy about this outcome.
Not by a long shot.
Amid the chaos in Washington, I was in Palm Beach talking to people close to the past and future president and called up other confidants afterward. This much became clear to me: Not only is Trump unhappy with the funding deal, hes unhappy with Johnson, too.
Playbook: Trump is backing away from Johnson just at the moment where the speaker most needs the new presidents help. Johnson wont be able to lose more than four Republican votes on Jan. 3, and its impossible to see him mustering that kind of unity without Trumps vocal backing.
His best friend right now? Circumstance. No Republican wants a reprise of last falls two-week power vacuum, least of all with the official electoral college tally scheduled for just three days later. No elected speaker means no certification. And it definitely means no progress on reconciliation forget the one-bill-or-two debate.

That should be a fun show to watch.

(851 posts)The Speaker of the House is the third in line to the presidency if something would happen to both T & V. Wouldn't the fact that he is not a natural born citizen disqualify him?

(8,547 posts)Hard to imagine she could muster the support.
If they don't rally behind Pastor Mike, it's hard to imagine who gets enough support to win.
I can't wait.

(60,012 posts)Although I think the article is wrong on the certification where it is done with a joint session of Congress with the VP (Harris) preciding.

(5,719 posts)That further reduces the Republican House majority. It would only take a few moderate Republicans to help elect a "compromise" Speaker, which would really piss off Trump.
Down ballot candidates did not gain from Trump's win. So he doesn't really have a mandate.
There is likely to be some sort of midterm shift as well.
I don't think Trump gets much grace period with voters because he's been president before. If he doesn't eliminate taxes on overtime and tips and bring prices down, I think switch over voters will turn away.

(60,012 posts)it will be a bad start if they don't immediately get a speaker. One impact is that if there is no speaker by Jan 21, I wonder if Trump will wait on pulling the 2 House members into his government until there is a speaker.
Even if there is a speaker, getting back to having the 220 seats won could include a period where there will be 3 vacant seats. If there are only 432 instead of 435 representatives. A tie does not win, so there is a period where they would have 217 representatives and they would need 216.

William Henry Harrison served for 32 days. For unpleasant reasons. Yet, he's on restaurant placemats "forever"
