By tanking the bipartisan bill, Elon and Donald stirred up heavy Republican infighting in the House, or so it seemed. Not only that, but by rejecting Musks and Trumps demands, Democrats demonstrated that they could be a mighty force to be reckoned with.
But if you were to read corporate medias take, thats not the impression you would walk away with. Almost every major news org spun a story to soften the blow for Trump and Republicans.
NBC News ran the headline: Congress avoids shutdown but leaves a big mess for Trump and Republicans in 2025. Congress didnt leave a mess, Trump and the GOP did.
USA Today went with: 'Enough blame to go around': Republicans, Democrats point fingers after near shutdown. I think we all know Republicans are to blame here.
AP printed: Government shutdown is averted just after deadline as Congress rejects Trumps debt limit demands. Fox, CBS, NYT, Reuters and so many others used similar titles. It wasnt Congressit was Democrats who rejected Donalds demands.

(19,529 posts)Dems generally don't threaten to withhold access from the press. Republicans weaponized that long ago. Many in the media feel they have to be "nice" or R's won't talk to them outside of Fux News. Right or wrong, that's the thinking.
But that still doesn't change the reality. House Dems maneuvered well and controlled the outcome. They voted as a block. That's very encouraging. Republicans can't control their own caucus and looked like morons by their own admission. See Ron Johnson's comments. In the end, with Senate adjustments, they ended up with roughly the same bill they started with. All the hoopla was for naught. March is going to be very interesting.

(333 posts)Would denying access to the press actually help the Magat administration? What would actually happen of they did deny access?

(6,612 posts)The propagandists got it exactly right in their minds--they know who their owners are, and they serve their owners. We have to stop thinking of "the press" as a source of information--it is now only a source of propaganda.
