Each time I have sat down to write something since the election, I am bothered by this recurring phrase that I simply cannot get out of my head.
So, this week I am going to just say it out loud: we are on our own.
I realize this raises as many questions as it answers. Who are the we? Where, exactly, are the we? And what do I mean by on our own? Let me unpack them in order.
The we is the easy part. It includes all of us who care about democracy, rule of law and free and fair elections. It is not a small group.
It includes tens of millions who voted for Kamala Harris and millions more who did not. That includes millions who did not vote as well as many who voted for Trump because they feel like the government is failing them, and Trump seemed like change from the broken status quo.
The hardest part to define and know for certain is where we are. I know for certain where we are heading.

(17,626 posts)and it's difficult to read it.
If you've followed his work or read his essays, you know that when everyone else has run out of ideas, or run out of hope, he's been the guy who held out hope, who had a plan nobody else had thought of, who had another lawsuit ready to go, or a team ready to take on the latest effort to purge or suppress votes in some red state.
So here we are. I hope he knows how much we appreciate all he's done. Democracy Docket became one of the most crucial blogs to come out of the last 8 years. Marc Elias has been a true American hero and a patriot.

Democracy has a chance.
But, yeah, we are on our own.

Think. Again.
(19,716 posts)We're all about to get inundared with an open firehouse of bullshit.
All we can do is try to protect each other and hang on tight to our morals, our ethics, and our willingness to be seen and heard standing against tyranny, until it ends.
The temptation will be strong to just join the the other side and get out of the way of the hell the nazi's want to drown us in, but honestly, would life even be worth living then?
