by Ashleigh Fields - 12/21/24 4:58 PM ET
President-elect Trump announced that Mark Burnett will serve as the special envoy to the United Kingdom in his next administration in a Saturday post on Truth Social.
With a distinguished career in television production and business, Mark brings a unique blend of diplomatic acumen and international recognition to this important role, Trump told his followers.
Burnett, 64, was born in the UK and created NBCs The Apprentice, which Trump served as the host of for 10 seasons. He also produced Survivor, The Voice and Shark Tank among other large television projects, and has won several Primetime Emmy awards.
Mark will work to enhance diplomatic relations, focusing on areas of mutual interest, including trade, investment opportunities, and cultural exchanges, Trump added in his post.
The former president previously declared billionaire Warren Stephens would be the ambassador to the UK. It is unclear how Burnetts role will fit into Trumps diplomacy efforts and whether the position will require a Senate confirmation.
Burnett previously opposed Trump and his bid for the White House.

(102,742 posts)And one with no diplomatic experience? Is Trump so senile he's forgotten he's already appointed an ambassador? Or drunk on power that he thinks he can just invent positions on a whim on a Saturday?

Nah, probably a request by Musk and Farage (Spell check just changed his name to Garage) as Burnett is a "successful TV producer" - maybe they think he can influence the BBC to lean more Right Wing. Or perhaps create a US policy alternative reality to foist on the British press.
Other than that, IDK what Burnett could add to the UK diplomatic activities.

(102,742 posts)This means he treated Trump with kid gloves when he had a tantrum.
What is the UK meant to do with him? He used to say he didn't support Trump at all. All he's done is make sure the embarrassing bits of The Apprentice never saw to light of day (though, frankly, Trump is unembarrassable, after being revealed as a rapist). There's no sign he's an insider in Trump circles. We have an ambassador we have to treat like he's a wise representative of the USA, though he's a waste of space. We have real diplomats in the permanent diplomatic service who do the real work. What's this 6th wheel for?

(44,874 posts)They create a lot of religious programming, so it was on brand for them to denounce hatred, division and misogyny. However, the man who pretty much single-handedly made Trump a viable presidential candidate could have done a lot more to puncture the myth of Trump and he never, ever did.

(56,972 posts)Highly educated, incredibly intelligent, a consummate diplomat, and well admired in diplomatic and legal circles. He was well-liked by the Brits, and they gave Clinton high marks for selecting him as our ambassador to the Court of St. James.
I cringe with embarrassment at the coming reactions to the array of insulting characters Trump and Co. are appointing to important diplomatic posts. I don't think I have any cringes left over his cabinet ppointments, but I was prepared for that after the last time.
