CONGRESSWOMAN TORRES VOTES NO ON REPUBLICAN CONTINUING RESOLUTION THAT THREATENS HEALTH CARE AND FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY

https://torres.house.gov/media-center/press-releases/congresswoman-torres-votes-no-on-republican-continuing-resolution-that-threatens-health-care-and-fiscal-responsibility

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Norma J. Torres (CA-35) voted against the Republican stop-gap federal funding bill – the Continuing Resolution (CR) – citing deep concerns over reckless provisions that undermine critical health care services and grant unchecked spending authority to President-elect Donald Trump for the next two years.

Impact on Health Care and Families:

Abandons breast and cervical cancer preventative services.
Cuts over $1 billion to the federal food stamps program, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
Cuts substance abuse treatment funding, and key foster youth support.
Guts childhood cancer research by $190 million.
Attack on Jobs and Workforce Development:

Eliminates funding for youth workforce investment programs designed to keep students in school and help youth facing homelessness.
Allows the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) to end, dismantling federal funding for youth pathways and work-based learning opportunities.
Abandons efforts to support domestic manufacturing and supply chain resilience through job creating programs.

“This bill is not a solution; it’s a political stunt,” added Rep. Torres. “It fails to meet the needs of families in CA-35 and across the country, and it opens the door to reckless governance that puts our future at risk. We need real bipartisan solutions that prioritize the people we serve, not partisan gamesmanship.”

I know the House & Senate Dems did the very best they could with what they had to work with (a bunch of magats!), BUT there seems to be a huge discrepancy between the supposed $190 million originally cut from the House Bill just for children's cancer research alone.

The Senate passed a bill totaling $12 million per year for 5 years = $60 million.

Where the fuck is the rest of that money?????

PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO WHAT THE RWNJ MEDIA IS ***NOT*** SAYING. THEREIN LIES THE IMPORTANT POINTS.

The following is from STATnews, setting forth the five areas of critical cancer research for children.

Has anyone heard about any of this being passed???

https://www.statnews.com/2024/12/20/pediatric-cancer-research-cut-from-gop-spending-bill-backlash-swift/

The following are the pediatric cancer measures that Republicans excluded in the new continuing resolution bill:

A program that rewards researchers for approvals of pediatric cancer drugs with valuable vouchers that require faster Food and Drug Administration reviews of another drug application of any kind. The priority review voucher program was to be extended until 2029.

A program that would allow kids with cancer who are covered by Medicaid and the Children’s health insurance program known as CHIP to receive out-of-state treatment.

New authority for the FDA to fine companies when they don’t complete required pediatric studies. The FDA already has this authority for adult studies.

New FDA authority to require that companies study pediatric drugs in combination with other treatments for the same disease when those treatments are owned by the same company or are available as generics.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gabriella_Miller_Kids_First_Research_Act

The bill would authorize $12.6 million out of the 10-Year Pediatric Research Initiative Fund for each of FY2014-FY2023 for pediatric research through the Common Fund. Requires such funds to supplement, not supplant, funds otherwise allocated by NIH for pediatric research. Prohibits the use of such amounts for any purpose other than allocating funds for making grants for pediatric research described in this Act.[6]

The Bill the Senate passed last night was for 5 years, so a bit over $60 million dollars for kids' cancer research, an embarrassingly low amount for such a wealthy country, imo.

Again, I am grateful to the Dems for fighting it out. I know they did the best they could with the steaming pile of magat dung they had to work with.

Senator Kaine sounded disgusted on NBC's website last night. Somewhere in this thread, I posted his comment and if NBC hasn't taken his comment down about how much narrower the scope of the cancer research for kids is and how much less money was approved by the Senate, you will have to scroll waaaaayyyy doen the page to see it.

PLEASE LISTEN TO WHAT THE MEDIA DOESN'T SAY... That is what is truly important.

Unfugging Believable!! I think they also tied to slip a pay raise for themselves. They should be paid nothing more than a hourly minimum wage for time spent in the House itself. They are useless and their work for the people is abysmal.

Thanks for your post, SheltieLover.

She is a Dem Rep.

Remember how the original House Bill was 1500 pgs & the Senate bill was comparatively very thin? Thereis a reason for it.

Please pay attention to what the scum media is NOT talking about!

I think she was discussing the second, C-SPAN was a bit behind yesterday and they were showing the day before. The Pediatric Cancer research funding and a couple other small but critical funding that had been stripped on #3 were added by the Senate before it went to the President for signing.
The Senate is apparently allowed to add some small budget cost items to a certain percentage amount on a CR without going back to the House. I can guarantee Jeffries and Schumer were talking strategy concerning the bill on what the House Dems could concede that the Senate could put back in.

The SNAP recovery increase was on the Farm Bill CR (expires in September) passed on Thursday by the House, and signed Friday. The Farm Bill also appears to include a small increase in SNAP this year.

So, the first CR was bi-partisan, the second was Trump/Musk, the third was the "Please, Democrats, save me" from Mike Johnson.

Far narrower in scope & much less money for health package. No cervicsl or breast cancer money & many of the 5 provisions for kids cancer research simply not funded.

It was $190 mill initially. What passed was $12.6 mill / yr for 5 yrs. Where the hell did nearly $130 mill go???

Yet the media, the same media that got tfg elected twice, would have us believe this was a big win for the Americsn people. It was anything but!

Pls always pay attn to whst the media is NOT talkinv about!

All credit to Dems for gettimg anything passed!

Please always pay attn to what the media is NOT talking about because therein lies the important details!

To hear all the media hoola, this was a great victory for kids & citizens. Thst is not the case.

Somewhere in this thread I posted Sen Kaine's bummed statement about what passed the Senate.

All credit to Dems for getting anything for taxpayers.
